I am watching 2 episodes of Gilligan's Island tonight.

If it was only a 3 hour tour - why did they have so much luggage?

Can anyone give a good explanation?

I don't know. But if the professor could make a clock out of a coconut why couldn't he fix the boat?

It was just a goofy TV show. I think the producers need to be given a certain amount of slack.

I could ask common sense questions about the movie "Back to the Future" which beg to be asked such as:

Before Marty went back to 1985 :

Why were there no other cars on the street?

If Doc Brown tore up the letter warning him to take precautions because he was going to be shot...why did he produce it whole when Marty returned to 1985?

Why didn't his parents and Doc Brown recognize Marty at least in the 80s for being the same Marty they had encountered in 1955?

We could go on and on about stuff that doesn't add up. I have a few more for the movie "Somewhere in Time."

We are watching through them now. Nearing the end of season one. The entire premise beggars the imagination.

And yet, it is still fun. So, in that light, here are some answers.

Not that Gilligan and the Skipper and the professor are always in the same clothes. They hadn't a clue. They expected a three hour tour.

The Howells were fleeing the IRS. They were supposed to be met at sea by an employee on a boat who would take them to a private, well furnished island where there were going to change their identities. Their mansion was already built.

MaryAnn was an ax murderer who planned to hijack the boat and make them take her to her gang who were to meet her at sea.

Ginger was a self centered actress. She had to be ready for any occasion.

Now that's a serious charge! Care to back that up?.....:tear:

Did you make that up? It certainly goes against her well-established character on the show.

Who was the unseen 8th character on the show? Yes, a regular.

I think the theory was the characters were all planning to go somewhere right after the tour, so they packed what they needed for later.

Seriously, my teenage daughters pack almost that much just to go to a friend's house for an afternoon. One totes along enough clothes and make-up for an army and the other has a purse that weighs as much as she does. (or so their daddy says)

    There's only one real question when it comes to Gilligan's Island;

    Mary Ann or Ginger?

Salty, I have always asked that question, especially the Howells. Remember how much stuff they had, and all the money. How many slinky dresses did Ginger have?

Hands down, it has always been Mary Ann. Even during the run of the show Dawn Wells always got a lot more fan mail.

One has to suspend their state of disbelief for the sake of artistic license.

I read somewhere on the internet [Therefore it MUST be true!!] that the reason they had so much luggage was so that they wouldn't have to wash their clothes that often.

    ----------------------------------------------------

Actually, I never cared that much for "Gilligan's Island." After you watched about 2 or 3 shows, you pretty much got the basic plot of the rest of the season.

Bob Denver (Gilligan) was much better in his earlier show "Dobie Gillis" where he portrayed the beatnik Maynard G. Crebbs [sp?].

Don't forget that items washed ashore several times. Once there was a trunk containing radioactive seeds, and I think I remember some costumes washing up another time.

And Ginger had dresses made from duffel bags and sails.

Wow, we agree on something! Yeah, Mary Ann had that pretty girl that lives next door vibe going for her.

It was not that so much as her wholesomeness, vivacity, cheerfulness and general sweetness in my opinion.
