What are your thoughts/views on music?

What do you hold to as acceptable music?

Why? Give your reasoning and tell us how you have come to the current position you now have on music, include personal experiences, personal background....etc.

    I'll go first.

At the moment i'm not too concrete on where I stand with music.

I am leaning more towards the conservative hymns and classical style of Spiritual songs.

I grew up doing drugs and listening to everything from Hip Hop, Rap, Rock, and Electronic dance music.

they went hand and hand for me.

With what I've seen the genres associated with, I have a hard time embracing CCM, and even Southern style genres, they reflect Christians trying to be like the world in my opinion.

I like traditional hymns. I find them to be joyous and uplifting.

Some country/bluegrass style songs work, good ol' gospel music.

I don't like modern stuff in church, doesn't feel right to me. And I am a musician myself (guitar).

Anything, pretty much, for other people. LOL
I do think we need to be sensitive and respectful in gatherings to the people there and the mood of the gathering. Many people do take offense to certain types of music and there's no need to offend some people when you can enjoy a certain style at home. Worship is worship, and if you can't do it without it being "your" style, you're not really using it to supplement true worship anyhow.

I like the majority of my music to have Christian lyrics, though I am not constantly using it to worship. Sometimes I just like listening to the sound and singing and don't want to hear trashy lyrics, but do want to enjoy a variety of styles.

I've come to believe that any genre is acceptable so long as the lyrics don't promote immorality.

I grew up in a family where only traditional music was acceptable. My mom said that contemporary music brought her back to a time when she wasn't living for God. She liked Southern gospel, but my dad considered Southern gospel just country music with a few Jesus words added in. My church preached against contemporary music throughout my childhood, and had tracts on this.

In my late teens I began to question what I had been taught regarding music. I was cautious and moved slowly in checking it out for myself. There was a Messiahanic Jewish family we knew that held a Bible study for teenage girls. These people were very knowledgeable and had a lot of awesome insight into the scriptures. We barely talked about music, but I noticed that on the oldest daughter's blog (the oldest daughter was the Bible study leader) she had a playlist. It included a couple CCM songs. They were people I looked up to and I couldn't imagine them promoting anything that was wrong, so that's the first time I can recall when I began to think that maybe there was some good CCM.

But I didn't begin looking into it right away, and when I did I moved very cautiously.
At the time I didn't do much research, I mainly checked out a particular band and noticed that their music seemed very doctrinally sound. I began to see that a lot of the things the tracts had said about CCM (concerning doctrine) wasn't universally true.
I moved very slowly, but eventually I began to check out other styles of music as well.

I still wondered from time to time if I was wrong to be even giving CCM a chance. At some point I began actually reading up on it a bit, but I don't recall exactly when or why. I do know that debate often forces me into a position where I'm puting the most thought and research into something, so it may have been internet debates.

I attend a weekly Bible study hosted by the local Christian radio station (the Bible study is more like a church service, actually), and the speakers they have are sometimes Christian music artists. Lots of variety there. We even have a rap/hip hop artist that comes through sometimes, even leading worship. Many of these people honestly seem to be strong Christians. There is little they've said while there that I've found disagreeable or questionable.

    Sorry, that was kinda long.....

I'm with quest although I might not prefer certain styles (metal, rap and that sort of thing), I definitely like a lot of styles of music. I prefer worship stuff and have been very much enjoying Keith and Kristyn Getty recently but also enjoy David Crowder, Matt Redman and that sort of thing. But when it comes time for me to buckle down and clean the house, it's 80s alternative all the way!

Any music is acceptable it's the lyrics that we .must concern ourselves with. In some cases I think poetic freedom goes too far.

I like and will listen to any music that glorifies Christ and I can understand what is being said.

I am anti- LOUD music and smoke machines.

I only listen to, and allow to be played in my house and my car, Christian music.

    I'm a Pan-Musician...

Everything sounds good to me, and the different sounds or varieties offer me the option to fine tune music services around the service in general!

    80's alternative? really?

    How do you justify that?

    Why does it need justified?

Why should anyone care what annsi listens to while housecleaning? Do you really think it matters to God?

Of course you have no scripture to back up your call for justification - only your opinion.

I pretty well listen to everything except country, punk, metal, and most forms of rap.

Generally speaking, I enjoy classical, jazz, and downbeat stuff. Often I listen to different world musicians from all over to hear their diverse sounds. There's some really great stuff out there.

In terms of lyrics, I don't listen to junk that demeans women, glorifies violence, or makes light of serious addictions. Its my conviction that music style isn't a big deal and that the Bible takes no stand on music styles or beats.

Some of the recent stuff I've bought include:
    Shai Linne
    Royal Tailor
    The Civil Wars
    Sting
    U2
    Imagine Dragons
    Coldplay
    David Crowder
    Passion
    King and Country

    Just a sample. :)

God cares about how things are done, there are 40 Chapters dedicated to the Tabernacle alone, and a lot to do with specifics (this cubit that cubit etc.)

Are we not the Tabernacle of the Holy Ghost?

What kind of Christian are you that you would dare say God does not care about every area of our lives?

We are to be Holy as he is Holy, Whether ye eat or drink or WHATSOEVER ye do, do ALL to the glory of God.

    Colossians 3:16, Eph 5:19:

Is 80s alternative psalms, hymns, or spiritual?

C4K if you honestly are going to argue for this type of music than I can no longer dialogue with you.

Clearly you think it's ok for a Christian to do whatever he wants,

What then shall we sin that grace may abound?

I listen to all kinds of music. Most if it is from Christian bands, but some is secular. I even like some '80s music--what makes that so unthinkable, in comparison to listening to styles such as metal? I find '70s and '80s music appealling--again, so long as the lyrics are not immoral.

You're certainly entitled to your own opinion, and nobody has the right to judge you for it. But is it really up to you to decide what people can and can't listen to?

No it's not up for me to decide. But I do try to side with the Lord.

You seem to be getting really defensive, almost rebellious,
almost like a "How dare you tell me something I like is wrong"

Reminds me of the attitude of a teenager living in fornication when you tell them it's wrong and they need to stop.

You are deceived if you think our Lord is pleased by unspiritual music.

    Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

What do you think these verses mean? Do you even believe the bible?

Or do you ignore these verses?

Yes, Jordan, I am a Christian who believes in Jesus Christ as my saviour, and I believe in the five fundamentals. Including infallibility of scripture. Although I identify as an evangelical rather than a fundamentalist. I attend a southern Baptist church.
I've been a Christian all my life. I received Jesus as my saviour in my childhood. I grew up learning scripture. I dedicated my life to God in my late teens. I've gone through trials that have tested my faith and come out with a stronger faith then ever before.

But please, you know nothing about me other than what I've told you. So please don't assume things about me or anyone else based on some arbitrary choices you happen to disagree with. We are to edify one another, but we are not to intentionally wound one another. Or force our perceptions on other believers. (Romans 14)

I'm not getting what the significance of '80s music that disturbs you so. I won't listen to it around you so as to avoid being a stumbling block, but that doesn't mean I won't listen to it in private.

It's about praising the Lord with your life. We're literally made to worship God and commune with him on a constant, daily basis.
Only God and myself can determine whether I do this. Yes, I fail God on a daily basis even on my best days. I'm human. I falter, I fall. I make mistakes.

Please Jordan, you seem to be a reasonable and logical young man. I legitimately expected better from you than to go throwing this brand of accusations at others. I'm not living in sin, nothing that the Bible clearly and demonstrably labels as sin. If I were fornicating or committing some other serious sin, you would be in the right to approach me. But that's not the case here.
I'm literally shaking right now. Rarely, very rarely, does anything said to me on the internet evoke such a response. I'm normally very much in control of my emotions and can take most things like water off a duck's back. I'm honestly hurt. You're treating me the way my family treated me for a time.

    Romans 14:
"4 Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand."

I still don't get what is so shocking. I've been arguing all along that the lyrics are what matter rather than the music. There are things I listen to that you obviously don't agree with. There are things I watch that I doubt you would approve of. I could link to you what I treat as my personal homepage on an art website. I'm sure you would find a number of things you disagree with.
And that's fine that you don't agree, but please don't assume that just because I allow myself more liberty in some areas makes me a blackslider. You don't know enough about me or my life or my walk with God to determine this.
