Okay, after five days of hype, he has spoken, and while it was much better than the comments "I don't have a plan" or "We'll manage them (ISIL)." It still left a lot to desire.

The disappointing part of his entire speech, for me, is the insistence that these terrorists, who pray to Allah, read the Kroan, and pray four times a day is this president's insistence that these people are not Islamic!

With that said, please rate the speech, from 1-10 with 10 being GREAT, and 1 being POOR! Please include any comments. And please, those who want to debate, fine, but stop judging others for following politics. No one is forcing you to read this OP or participate in the rating of the speech!

I guess my biggest fear was that he was going to announce a reentry into Iraq. By and large that fear was quelled...for now. It looks like my desired approach of continued airstrikes and SF involvement will be the limit of our involvement with ISIS. Didn't really care what else he had to say. I guess the overall emotion I felt was relief.

I'll give him a 4 out of 5 stars. He spoke clearly and with some conviction, and his delivery was fast and sure. (Someone must have cranked up the speed of the teleprompter a couple of notches.) I thought he actually looked like a leader, for once. I think he accomplished what he wanted to do.

Now, as to the content....I guess that's for another thread.

I'll give him a 1 or possibly a 2 out of 10. It was a poor speech. What was that 2 minute stretch in the middle that sounded like a campaign speech? He clearly doesn't know what Islam or ISIS is. Maybe he is still afraid of offending Muslims? He did call ISIS a cancer, but still failed to call it evil, unless I missed it. He clearly announced nothing new. No boots on the ground, only attempts to gain support of regional allies to do the dirty work on the ground. I guess it is going to take another attack on our soil to get his attention and then I'm not sure that will do it.

He is so afraid of America looking like a Super Power, why? He doesn't want to be the leader of the greatest country in the world, he wants to be the world (community) organizer.

I'll bet he hated to give this speech. I bet he was pushed out in front of the cameras by his advisors. He is probably puking in the WH toilet right now.

    Me too .....

I do not want to see us go back to ground warfare. To many have already died and many more suffer permanent injures, and for what?

The only thing is, and I hate to say this .... but watching him tonight, I couldn't get LBJ out of my mind, and how hed go on television and say no ground troops in Nam, and before you knew it, 500,000 troops were over there, fighting for what?

I am afraid Obama is preparing America and himself, for what will eventually have to be done, and that is take to the ground to kill these guys. Even though the rest of the Muslim world should be carrying the load, they never will. They will give us reduced prices on oil [which the consumer will never see], and allow us airspace and bases in their countries, but they won't fight until the terrorists invade their sovereign land!

I am hoping this happens, and soon, because it is what these guys need to do. Fight each other and settle it between themselves! We can't be their police force and private mercenary army.

America should only fight with ground troops if we are attacked on our soil! More power to Obama if he can round up a world of support and talk them into doing the leg work! As a community organizer, I think he may be successful at this aspect of this plan! :type:

I'd have given him a higher score ....

But at the end, why did he have to move into election mode and talk about the economy, job creation, and how rosey things are? It sounded like a re-election speech at the end and that bothered me!

So like you, maybe a 5, but no more than a five!

I can't stand to listen to him. I didn't watch it. Nor did I watch Dubya when he spoke. Politics are a sick charade. Might as well watch professional wrestling since it has the same level of realism.

Out of everything addressed in the speech, your big take away was him calling them a cancer vs evil? Isn't that a tad bit pedantic. Also, I take it you are in favor of a reoccupation of Iraq?

Agreed. If we do have to go in I want Iran and Syria right there with us. ISIS is a bigger problem for them then they are with us so if we go it wouldn't hurt to have those guys help and eventually be put in a position to be in our debt.

The Election is close at hand. Air Power never won a war by itself. No one is going to send any troops to help 0bam@ with his record. We already have boots on the ground. It is up to the Democrats to decide.

Obama said "If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven.”

    What do you mean "IF"

What do you call the beheading of two Americans?

Every country in NATO should be sending troops - and then Demand nothing less than unconditional surrender.

it's a shame how folks play politics.

Up to the Democrats to decide what? The American people elected Democrats and Republicans. Why don't they both decide? I guess if one side decides it's up to the other side, then they can place on the blame in one place if things go awry.

Politics. I guess not wasting a good crisis applies to both sides. Imagine that.

The only thing ironic is how I can turn on talk radio and hear Sean Hannity and Rush spouting the same talking points of "air power never won a war by itself". It's hilarious how this stuff gets repeated and it becomes the quasi-party position.

Yes, UseofTime calls it the echo chamber effect. Very much in place here on BB.

I seem to remember in the first Gulf War that we used air power to bomb the Iraqi positions for weeks on end. We basically bombed them into submission. Then when the ground war started it was essentially a prisoner round up with mass surrender of the Iraqi army. I would say that "air power alone" basically won that war. (And yes, I am aware that tank warfare occurred.)

Then ten years ago these talking head idiots said the reason we were going to win in Afghanistan was because we had superior technology.

Now they have changed their tune in order to (continually) oppose the President.

Two other reasons we won Iraq: Schwartskopf and Powell.

Didn't watch/listen. I decided before his first term was over, that if he was moving his lips, he was lying. Ergo, no point in spending my time watching his nose grow!!
