Good question...
One of the things noted as an abomination to God...."a heart that devises wickedness..."
Now, a vast majority of divorces occur due to infidelity, greed(dad knew a couple who divorced after over 60 years of marriage over an inheritance where one got $$$ and wouldn't share), one trying to get their spouse knocked off to collect their insurance policy and were caught before it happened, &c. So, wouldn't it suffice to say that falls under "a heart that devises wickedness"?
Yet, as lost peoples, they will be forgiven if they repent of their sins...
I would tack on the "soweth discord among the brethren" on that one as well. I've seen marriages and divorces that cause so much strife among families and churches that it's basically a poison.
Personally, Salty, I think divorce is an abomination before the Lord. He said from the very beginning that what God has joined let no man put asunder. But God has also been extremely gracious and forgiving of us, and He's winked at the times of our transgressions, and He's recognized that we have hard hearts, and has been (I suppose the best word is) tolerant of our transgression concerning marriage.
Because man was so willing to tolerate divorce it became commonplace for divorce to be easier in the eyes of man. Such was our transgression of this commandment from God that Jesus Christ said divorce should only ever occur for one reason: fornication.
Man has made divorce such an easy thing that people think they should be allowed to get divorced simply because the carnal act isn't satisfying enough, or because one of them is not good at managing money, or because they disagree over certain issues. This ought not be the case, but such is the wickedness of man. Many people treat marriage as a co-equal contract of two fully independent human beings, but according to the Word when a man and woman join in marriage they are no longer two beings, but one flesh. How many marriages truly function as "one flesh?"
