Well, it's obvious that I admire a lot of Calvinist preachers, authors and scholars. However, this thread is for non-Calvinists here. I want you (plural) to openly declare the names of some Calvinistic preachers, authors and scholars who you appreciate. You appreciate them though disagreeing with them on some significant points.

Do you actually listen to Calvinistic sermons or read books, such as commentaries from noted Calvinists of the past and present? Who do you respect?

I think names that may crop up are Spurgeon primarily, and John MacArthur. But you can surprise me.

I respect John Calvin though I do not agree with him on some stuff. :)

Then James Montgomery Boice and ML-J...Both big influences. Also like Fergusion--very scholarly but with a sense of humor. Oh wow, George Whitefield...I adore him if I could say that.

I believe Steaver is on record for saying he has listened to countless hours of Piper, Sproul, and MacArthur. :sleeping_2:

I respect John Calvin on the sovereignty of God and RC Sproul on his teaching that regeneration precedes faith, but disagree with both men on their view of the believers experience with justification by faith.

Cal Brothers, I'm ashamed to say that your reading comphrension is not very good with regard to the OP. Its my understanding this thread is for Non-Cals to discuss Calvinists they admire. I'm assuming to piggyback to the old Rippon thread entitled "Arminians That I Admire".

Seeing that Rev is the only non-cal to reply so far, Rippon may be proving his point?

I am not a Calvinist and neither is Earth, Wind, and Fire. I stated in my post I disagree with Calvinists on justification by faith. I am a Primitive Baptist. Calvinism's primary slogan is "sola fide" -- faith alone. The doctrine of "justification by faith alone" is the bedrock of Reformed Theology. By that phrase, they mean that sinners are justified in the sight of God only by the act of believing the gospel, not by their works. Primitive Baptist believe Scripture teaches that the subject of justification has various phases -- by blood, by faith, and by works -- hence, the word "alone" is misleading. If I was forced to employ the word "alone", I would rather speak of "justification by grace alone" or "justification by blood alone". Justification by Faith (Rom 4) to most Primitive Baptists is experiential only. In short, when a born again person trusts solely in Christ's power to raise the dead, that faith is "counted unto him" for righteousness. The already existed reality of being redeemed (justified by blood) is understood by the believer.

Abraham was walking by faith 15 years prior to the event in which he was “justified by faith,” all the way back in Genesis 12:1 when he followed God by faith and left Ur. Hmm...how can one walk by faith for over a decade prior to being justified by faith, if justification by faith and the new birth are synonyms? Simple, that idea is erroneous.

Tiny Moore was my uncle by marriage. Married my great-aunt, Dean McKinney, who also sang with Bob Wills.

    Enjoy.

Also, while you're on Youtube, check out Buddy Holgi and Matt Cowe. Two of my favorite guitarists, they do several Bob Wills covers.

And also, also while you're on Youtube, check out the Quebe Sisters. Three little girls who do western Swing. They've played with Asleep at the Wheel, Riders In The Sky, and Marty Stuart.

IMO....people who say they're not a Calvinist and then defend the Doctrines of Grace to the bitter end are being disingenuous. Sure, I don't agree with infant baptism, but there's much more to it that just that. I have zero problem with being called a Calvinist. There was much to admire about his doctrines...

However, you have made some statements in the past which tend to belie that:
I am a Calvinist for a reason, because the gospel contains it. (5/11/2011)

Still searching but obviously you can see why I camp with the Calvinists. (11/6/2011)

    Excellent post brother.

The only mention of 'faith alone' to be found in all of scripture:

Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith. Ja 2:24

Abraham, through his 'patience in well doing', showed his faith. He showed 'the work of the law written upon his heart' long before Gen 15:6.

"There is a deadly and damnable heresy being widely propagated today to the effect that, if a sinner truly accepts Christ as his personal Saviour, no matter how he lives afterwards, he cannot perish. That is a satanic lie, for it is at direct variance with the teaching of the Word of truth. Something more than believing in Christ is necessary to ensure the soul's reaching heaven."

Well, yeah, even the demons believe.

One must first and foremost be born from above. Only the children of the heavenly Zion are capable of that deep conviction which is biblical faith.
