SDA Sabbath keeping?

Active Member
The first time I have seen Vooks touch sensibility.

Let me ask you now, Vokks, WHAT is so <<interesting why Israel was to keep sabbath?>>

WAS IT NOT BECAUSE the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm" ---which was Christ and that "Therefore (because Jesus gave them Rest) the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.??

Are you also a Sabbathtarian?

Then WHY would YOU believe the Seventh Day is Christian Sabbath?

My friend,I esteem all days alike, just worship corporately on Sunday's because of expediency.

Deuteronomy 5 is a record of the Ten Commandments. Here unlike in Exodus 20, the BASIS for sabbath is deliverance from Egypt not creation.

Sabbath is as valid for a Christian as circumcision

I have answered him numerous times that Is 58:13-14, Ex 20:8-11, Is 66:23, Lev 23:1-4 provide perfect examples of how to keep it.

Ex 20:8-11
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Is 58:13-14
13 “If because of the Sabbath, you turn your foot
From doing your own pleasure
on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable,
And honor it, desisting from your own ways,
From seeking your own pleasure
And speaking your own word,
14 Then you will take delight in the Lord,
And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;
And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father,
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Isaiah 56 said Gentiles should keep the Sabbath. "Also the sons of the stranger ... every one that keeps the Sabbath ... for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people." Isaiah 56:6, 7. Thus the Sabbath is for Gentiles and “all people,” not just for Jews.

"All" mankind will keep the Sabbath in the New Earth. In "the new earth ... from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, says the Lord." Isaiah 66:22, 23. Here God says that “all flesh” will be keeping the Sabbath in “the new earth.” If this is the case – and it is – shouldn’t we start now?

Lev 23
The Sabbath
3 ‘Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work on it; it is the Sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings.

Gentiles kept the Sabbath in the Book of Acts. "The Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath ... Paul and Barnabas ... persuaded them to continue in the grace of God."' Acts 13:42, 43. Here saved-by-grace Gentiles kept the Sabbath (see also verse 44). See also Acts 17 and Acts 18... of them with Sabbath after Sabbath worship services and Gospel teaching in the synagogues.

so then - we don't engage in secular activity, discussion, or secular work -and we do engage in corporate worship "Holy Convocation" on Sabbath from Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset. "from evening to evening" Is when the day is to be observed.

=========================
And that Romans 8:4-9 declares that the lost do not and also cannot keep the Law of God.

in Christ,

Bob

This is as much as a detailed answer that we have from you, and it still is not the Biblical method of keeping the Sabbath.

Until you notice that I was quoting the Bible - that is.

Lev 23:1-4 it is a day of "holy Convocation".
Is 66:23 - "From Sabbath to Sabbath shall ALL MANKIND come before Me to bow down in worship" -- for all eternity in the New Heavens and New Earth.

Those texts were not as hard for us all to read as you may have first imagined.

I will stick with the bible on this one.

Your idea of trying line-judge all who do keep the Sabbath is seems a bit short sighted. You have to first know what the Sabbath is.

in Christ,

Bob

You can't hide behind Scripture--all of it either with no context or taken out of context.
You don't live in a world where all "mankind is bowing down to Christ." Neither do you live in the new earth. So why do you quote scripture relevant to that time?
Even if you do, there is no command to keep the Sabbath.
And simply by quoting such a scripture, does not even come close to answering my question. It has nothing to do with it. It is a red herring.

How (not why), HOW, do you observe the Sabbath day in a Biblical way.
The answer--You don't.
In fact you don't know how to observe the Sabbath, and your answer demonstrated that.

Very impressive. <<I esteem>>.

Very convenient. <<because of Sunday's expediency>>.

Very certain. <<Sabbath is as valid for a Christian as circumcision>>

Very biased i.e., anti-Christ. <<<Deuteronomy 5 is a record of the Ten Commandments. Here unlike in Exodus 20, the BASIS for sabbath is deliverance from Egypt not creation.>>>

So it's <<creation>> versus <<deliverance>> and both <creation> and <deliverance> versus "JESUS having given the People of God (God's) Rest" --having RAISED FROM THE DEAD-- "THEREFORE keeping of the Sabbath remains".

"THEREFORE..." because God raised Christ from the dead "ON THE SABBATH".

But that is GOD, esteeming one day above and before any other;

But that has no convenience and no expediency for anyone the same as certainly circumcision has no convenience or expediency for anyone.

Beautiful Poeksie! Beautiful. Party your Sundays! God must love that kind of worship.

You can't hide behind Scripture--

Ephesians 6:10-17 says it is the Armor of God -

Far from me to discard it and settle instead for all-ad-hominem fluff the way two or three have done recently.

all of it either with no context or taken out of context.
You don't live in a world where all "mankind is bowing down to Christ."

That is true - lots of rebellion on this planet - is rebellion some sort of "disproof of scripture"???

Neither do you live in the new earth. So why do you quote scripture relevant to that time?

1. Eternity in the New Earth is -- "After the cross". So no after-cross delete!
2. It shows that even in the OT the purpose, scope, application of the Sabbath was "all mankind" explicit in the text.
3. Even the majority of Pro-SUNDAY scholarship accepts this Bible detail about the Ten Commandments (including the 4th) as applicable to ALL mankind in BOTH the OT and the post-cross NT.

Even if you do, there is no command to keep the Sabbath.

There is in the actual Bible.

How (not why), HOW, do you observe the Sabbath day in a Biblical way.

Lev 23:1-3 speaks to WHAT shall be done on Sabbath
Ex 20:8-11 speaks to WHAT shall be done on Sabbath
Is 66:23 speaks to WHAT shall be done on Sabbath.
Is 58:13 speaks to WHAT shall be done on Sabbath.
Mark 2 speaks to WHAT shall be done on Sabbath

WHAT shall be done on Sabbath - answers HOW to keep the Sabbath.

In fact you don't know how to observe the Sabbath, and your answer demonstrated that.

You make such false factless accusations "as if" you have established some credibility for yourself in that area. Why??

a total non sequitor. What has that got to do with the Sabbath keeping?

Of course. The world doesn't keep the Sabbath. But the verse you quoted out of context says all the world does. So you have a blatant contradiction.
I am not speaking of the beliefs of other men; I am speaking of what the Bible says. You don't seem to care about what the Scriptures says. Neither do you care about how the scriptures apply to you personally.

You still haven't answered the question (and apparently cannot) :
HOW, do you observe the Sabbath day in a Biblical way.
There is in the actual Bible.
How does it apply to you? Do you know? See my above question. Answer it.
Even the majority of Pro-SUNDAY scholarship accepts this Bible detail about the Ten Commandments (including the 4th) as applicable to ALL mankind in BOTH the OT and the post-cross NT.
Do you answer to men or the Bible?
You cannot answer to the Bible. You have not answered to the Bible. You refuse to answer the Bible. What is up with that? An SDA cannot explain how the Bible applies to him. Amazing isn't it? Let me repeat:

HOW, do you observe the Sabbath day in a Biblical way.
Lev 23:1-3 speaks to WHAT shall be done on Sabbath
Ex 20:8-11 speaks to WHAT shall be done on Sabbath
Is 66:23 speaks to WHAT shall be done on Sabbath.

Mark 2 speaks to WHAT shall be done on Sabbath

WHAT shall be done on Sabbath - answers HOW to keep the Sabbath.
Let me repeat the question:
HOW, do you observe the Sabbath day in a Biblical way.
--Quoting scripture is not enough. It is the application of scripture that is needed.
You make such false factless accusations "as if" you have established some credibility for yourself in that area. Why??
Let me repeat the question:
HOW, do you observe the Sabbath day in a Biblical way.

It is a fact. You have not answered this question. This is not "factless" as you claim. You refuse to answer this question. Why? Because you do not keep the Sabbath, according to the Bible. You cannot. And therefore you do not answer this question. You know I am right.

DHK,
don't get worked up by cultists. They are well trained to be obtuse and dumb when they run into contradictions, when they go off script. They can either flee or throw vague scriptures and insist the same answer your question when they don't.

BobRyan is cornered. You will never extract any explanation or answer from him. He will repeat those verses forever to exasperate you. No different from a kid shutting their ears and shouting at you so they can't hear you talking to them. When an otherwise sober debater suddenly resorts to these tactics, know for a truth they are out of their depth.

Here are some things no Adventist will NEVER dare explain yet they believe them with all their guts;
1. COMMANDMENTS is a term always referring to the Ten Commandments
2. Blood of a sin sacrifice transfers sins onto the Holy of Holies/Sanctuary
3. There are moral and ceremonial laws and the Ten Commandments are moral laws

Demonstrate that the Gentiles were "keeping" the Sabbath. There is nothing in the text that says that. It was the Jews that were keeping the Sabbath. Had not the Jews been there, there would have been no Sabbath to keep. From what was being taught in the synagogue that day they besought Paul to come and teach them. They gathered for the purpose of hearing the preaching and teaching of Paul the next sabbath, not for the purpose of keeping the sabbath. Gentiles did not keep the Sabbath.

Neither did Paul enter into a synagogue for the purpose of keeping the Sabbath. He used it for an opportunity to preach "to the Jews first and also to the Greeks." He was not keeping the Sabbath.
"so then - we don't engage in secular activity, discussion, or secular work -and we do engage in corporate worship "Holy Convocation" on Sabbath from Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset. "from evening to evening" Is when the day is to be observed.
What makes you think that what you are doing here is keeping the Sabbath. You are not. You just think you are. The sabbath was not for worship; it was for rest.
And that Romans 8:4-9 declares that the lost do not and also cannot keep the Law of God.
Thus your own contradiction. The Gentiles that Paul preached to were not saved.
For that fact, the Jews that Paul preached to were not saved either.

Here is how the Sabbath was kept:
Check here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shabbat
It is doubtful that the SDA's do anything remotely similar to this.

Following the Scriptures as closely as possible the modern day Jew observes the Sabbath in this manner:
Shabbat is primarily a day of rest and spiritual enrichment. The word "Shabbat" comes from the root Shin-Beit-Tav, meaning to cease, to end, or to rest.

Shabbat is not specifically a day of prayer. Although we do pray on Shabbat, and spend a substantial amount of time in synagogue praying, prayer is not what distinguishes Shabbat from the rest of the week. Observant Jews pray every day, three times a day. See Jewish Liturgy. To say that Shabbat is a day of prayer is no more accurate than to say that Shabbat is a day of feasting: we eat every day, but on Shabbat, we eat more elaborately and in a more leisurely fashion. The same can be said of prayer on Shabbat.

What does the Exodus have to do with resting on the seventh day? It's all about freedom. As I said before, in ancient times, leisure was confined to certain classes; slaves did not get days off. Thus, by resting on Shabbat, we are reminded that we are free. But in a more general sense, Shabbat frees us from our weekday concerns, from our deadlines and schedules and commitments. During the week, we are slaves to our jobs, to our creditors, to our need to provide for ourselves; on Shabbat, we are freed from these concerns, much as our ancestors were freed from slavery in Egypt.

We remember these two meanings of Shabbat when we recite kiddush (the prayer over wine sanctifying Shabbat or a holiday). Friday night kiddush refers to Shabbat as both zikaron l'ma'aseih v'rei'shit (a memorial of the work in the beginning) and zeikher litzi'at Mitz'rayim (a remembrance of the exodus from Egypt).

Most Americans see the word "work" and think of it in the English sense of the word: physical labor and effort, or employment. Under this definition, turning on a light would be permitted, because it does not require effort, but a rabbi would not be permitted to lead Shabbat services, because leading services is his employment. Jewish law prohibits the former and permits the latter. Many Americans therefore conclude that Jewish law doesn't make any sense.

The problem lies not in Jewish law, but in the definition that Americans are using. The Torah does not prohibit "work" in the 20th century English sense of the word. The Torah prohibits "melachah" (Mem-Lamed-Alef-Kaf-Hei), which is usually translated as "work," but does not mean precisely the same thing as the English word. Before you can begin to understand the Shabbat restrictions, you must understand the word "melachah."

Melachah generally refers to the kind of work that is creative, or that exercises control or dominion over your environment. The word may be related to "melekh" (king; Mem-Lamed-Kaf). The quintessential example of melachah is the work of creating the universe, which G-d ceased from on the seventh day. Note that G-d's work did not require a great physical effort: he spoke, and it was done.

The word melachah is rarely used in scripture outside of the context of Shabbat and holiday restrictions. The only other repeated use of the word is in the discussion of the building of the sanctuary and its vessels in the wilderness. Exodus Ch. 31, 35-38. Notably, the Shabbat restrictions are reiterated during this discussion (Ex. 31:13), thus we can infer that the work of creating the sanctuary had to be stopped for Shabbat. From this, the rabbis concluded that the work prohibited on Shabbat is the same as the work of creating the sanctuary. They found 39 categories of forbidden acts, all of which are types of work that were needed to build the sanctuary:

Taking an object from the private domain to the public, or transporting an object in the public domain.
(Mishnah Shabbat, 7:2)

All of these tasks are prohibited, as well as any task that operates by the same principle or has the same purpose. In addition, the rabbis have prohibited handling any implement that is intended to perform one of the above purposes (for example, a hammer, a pencil or a match) unless the tool is needed for a permitted purpose (using a hammer to crack nuts when nothing else is available) or needs to be moved to do something permitted (moving a pencil that is sitting on a prayer book), or in certain other limited circumstances. Objects that may not be handled on Shabbat are referred to as "muktzeh," which means, "that which is set aside," because you set it aside (and don't use it unnecessarily) on Shabbat.

The rabbis have also prohibited travel, buying and selling, and other weekday tasks that would interfere with the spirit of Shabbat. The use of electricity is prohibited because it serves the same function as fire or some of the other prohibitions, or because it is technically considered to be "fire."

The issue of the use of an automobile on Shabbat, so often argued by non-observant Jews, is not really an issue at all for observant Jews. The automobile is powered by an internal combustion engine, which operates by burning gasoline and oil, a clear violation of the Torah prohibition against kindling a fire. In addition, the movement of the car would constitute transporting an object in the public domain, another violation of a Torah prohibition, and in all likelihood the car would be used to travel a distance greater than that permitted by rabbinical prohibitions. For all these reasons, and many more, the use of an automobile on Shabbat is clearly not permitted.

Shabbat, like all Jewish days, begins at sunset, because in the story of creation in Genesis Ch. 1, you will notice that it says, "And there was evening, and there was morning, one day." From this, we infer that a day begins with evening, that is, sunset. For the precise time when Shabbat begins and ends in your area, consult the list of candle lighting times provided by the Orthodox Union, by Chabad or by any Jewish calendar.

Shabbat candles are lit and a blessing is recited no later than eighteen minutes before sunset. This ritual, performed by the woman of the house, officially marks the beginning of Shabbat. Two candles are lit, representing the two commandments: zakhor (remember) and shamor (observe), discussed above.

The family then attends a brief evening service (45 minutes - that's brief by Jewish standards - see Jewish Liturgy).

After services, the family comes home for a festive, leisurely dinner. Before dinner, the man of the house recites Kiddush, a prayer over wine sanctifying Shabbat. The usual prayer for eating bread is recited over two loaves of challah, a sweet, eggy bread shaped in a braid. The family then eats dinner. Although there are no specific requirements or customs regarding what to eat, meals are generally stewed or slow cooked items, because of the prohibition against cooking during Shabbat. (Things that are mostly cooked before Shabbat and then reheated or kept warm are OK).

After dinner, the birkat ha-mazon (grace after meals) is recited. Although this is done every day, on Shabbat, it is done in a leisurely manner with many upbeat tunes.

By the time all of this is completed, it may be 9PM or later. The family has an hour or two to talk or study Torah, and then go to sleep.

The next morning Shabbat services begin around 9AM and continue until about noon. After services, the family says kiddush again and has another leisurely, festive meal. A typical afternoon meal is cholent, a very slowly cooked stew. My recipe is below. By the time birkat ha-mazon is done, it is about 2PM. The family studies Torah for a while, talks, takes an afternoon walk, plays some checkers, or engages in other leisure activities. A short afternoon nap is not uncommon. It is traditional to have a third meal before Shabbat is over. This is usually a light meal in the late afternoon.

Shabbat ends at nightfall, when three stars are visible, approximately 40 minutes after sunset. At the conclusion of Shabbat, the family performs a concluding ritual called Havdalah (separation, division). Blessings are recited over wine, spices and candles. Then a blessing is recited regarding the division between the sacred and the secular, between Shabbat and the working days, etc. For details, see Havdalah Home Ritual.

As you can see, Shabbat is a very full day when it is properly observed, and very relaxing. You really don't miss being unable to turn on the TV, drive a car or go shopping.

It is doubtful that the SDA's do anything remotely similar to this.

Following the Scriptures as closely as possible the modern day Jew observes the Sabbath in this manner:

Does Bob keep the Sabbath? It is very doubtful.
Now DHK. I'm sure that Bob follows it. I'm sure he doesn't even use electricity on the sabbath. That has the potential to violate 3 or 4 sabbath categories. I'm sure his house is cold and dark on those winter sabbath months. :)

Well....technically I guess he can turn all his lights on and heat on*(before sabbath starts), but he needs to be sure nothing shuts off*(until after sabbath). The heat needs to run none stop. Could get toasty.

Electricity

Main article:*Electricity on Shabbat

Orthodox and some Conservative authorities rule that turning*electric*devices on or off is prohibited as a*melakhah; however, authorities are not in agreement about exactly which one(s). One view is that tiny sparks are created in a switch when the circuit is closed, and this would constitute lighting a fire (category 37). If the appliance is purposed for light or heat (such as an*incandescent bulb*or electric oven), then the lighting or heating elements may be considered as a type of fire that falls under both lighting a fire (category 37) and cooking (i.e., baking, category 11). Turning lights off would be extinguishing a fire (category 36).

A couple of years ago, where I live, one day in winter we were the coldest place on the planet. In Fahrenheit (with the windchill), it hit minus 70. Do you think the SDA's would last here without electricity. Our daylight is very short at that time of year also.

There is no Sabbath Rest without the heat from the "ALL-EXCEEDING GREATNESS OF GOD'S POWER which He GENERATED IN CHRIST WHEN HE RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD AND EXALTED HIM FAR ABOVE ALL POWER."

How strange, that Seventh-day Adventists refuse to make use of THIS "SUPREME ENERGY OF GOD" specifically "on the Sabbath"!

Ephesians 6:10-17 says it (scripture) is the Armor of God -

Far from me to discard scripture and settle instead for all-ad-hominem fluff the way two or three have done recently.

Hold on a sec - I will quote them for you "again"

Red herring - straw man - as we both know -- I never claim that today all mankind is obedient to God on any point at all.

next.

They are simply admitting to 'what the Bible says' --

as it turns out.

=================================
DHK - tell me what part of these scriptures is difficult to read when it comes to "HOW" to keep the Sabbath as in WHAT we are supposed to be doing --

"All" mankind will keep the Sabbath in the New Earth. In "the new earth ... from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, says the Lord." Isaiah 66:22, 23. so then - we don't engage in secular activity, discussion, or secular work -and we do engage in corporate worship "Holy Convocation" on Sabbath from Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset. "from evening to evening" Is when the day is to be observed.

And that Romans 8:4-9 declares that the lost do not and also cannot keep the Law of God.

Whenever the Bible comes up on this topic - the pharisees of Mark 2 come along and accuse Christ of breaking the Sabbath.

Some things never change --- apparently.

- D.L. Moody notices that some are opposed to the Sabbath Commandment - but notice how this sermon on the TEN Commandments also fits the summary of 7 points listed here on page 1??

BY THE
DWIGHT L. MOODY
The Ten Commandments:
Exodus 20:2-17
.
The Fourth Commandment

Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the LORD made heaven and Earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath Day, and hallowed it.

THERE HAS BEEN an awful letting-down in this country regarding the Sabbath during the last twenty-five years, and many a man has been shorn of spiritual power, like Samson, because he is not straight on this question. Can you say that you observe the Sabbath properly? You may be a professed Christian: are you obeying this commandment? Or do you neglect the house of God on the Sabbath day, and spend your time drinking and carousing in places of vice and crime, showing contempt for God and His law? Are you ready to step into the scales? Where were you last Sabbath? How did you spend it?

I honestly believe that this commandment is just as binding today as it ever was. I have talked with men who have said that it has been abrogated, but they have never been able to point to any place in the Bible where God repealed it. When Christ was on earth, He did nothing to set it aside; He freed it from the traces under which the scribes and Pharisees had put it, and gave it its true place.
"The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath." (Mark 2:27)
It is just as practicable and as necessary for men today as it ever was- in fact, more than ever, because we live in such an intense age.

The Sabbath was binding in Eden, and it has been in force ever since. The fourth commandment begins with the word remember, showing that the Sabbath already existed when God wrote this law on the tables of stone at Sinai.
How can men claim that this one commandment has been done away with when they will admit that the other nine are still binding?

I believe that the Sabbath question today is a vital one for the whole country. It is the burning question of the present time. If you give up the Sabbath the church goes;

=====================================================

Question - how then does D.L. Moody end his sermon section on the 4th Commandment?

Does anyone know?

Question - how then does D.L. Moody end his sermon section on the 4th Commandment?

Does anyone know?
It doesn't matter how he ended it. He is only a man. He wasn't even a Baptist. He was an evangelist with perhaps a grade five education. But he did do well for himself.
Either way his words are not inspired.

Your problem is that you have no way to answer post #30 and thus have not touched it.
Therefore my assertion stands: You do not keep the Sabbath. The SDA movement is nothing but hypocrisy. They play a game of keeping the Sabbath. They say one thing and do another. They don't have any intent on keeping the Sabbath. If you did keep the Sabbath you would put a lot more effort into it, but it is too much "work" (oh the irony)!

But you don't keep the Sabbath, and it is likely that you never will.

It really doesn't matter if he considered Saturday or Sunday as the Sabbath. He urged people to attend church on Sunday. I also go to church on Sunday. That is the extent of it. That is not keeping the Sabbath. Even if Moody claims it is keeping the Sabbath, it isn't. Moody is wrong.
Keeping the Sabbath involves much more just as I described to you in a previous post. But you won't address that post will you?

I don't have the problem. I am not the one that is wrong. I don't "pretend" about keeping the Sabbath. The Sabbath is not for today. The Sabbath was never given to Gentile believers and you have never been able to demonstrate that it has. Never have you been able to point to any NT command for a believer to keep the Sabbath.

And indeed you do not keep the Sabbath as I have demonstrated in a previous post. But you won't address that will you?
