It's that time of year again.

    I played my best for Him . . .

Then He smiled at me . . .
    Me and my drum.

Is our best really good enough, and would Christ smile upon our machines?

Here we go again...You're a little early this year. It's not even December yet.

I Cor 3:12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is.
14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.

What do you mean "good enough"? Good enough for what?

People will be rewarded for things they do here on Earth. Jesus will smile upon them. Their works will be "good enough".

Just asking for clarification. You believe the song means the drummer boy is trying to work to be saved?

I'm glad my God isn't a hateful God that only looks on me with distaste and contempt.

I think the song reflects the common misperception of grace. That's all I'm saying.

It isn't that you're not contemptible and distasteful. Your acceptance is because of your union with Christ and His merits.

Oh ok. What I am trying to determine is what you see as a common misconception of grace exactly. Can you clarify that for me?

That He overlooks our shortcomings and smiles upon our filthy rags.

That is not what the song communicates at all. In fact the lyrics of the song make it clear its own intent:

What the drummer boy in that song was doing was nothing more than what the Magi did later. In fact still to this day in areas like southeast Asia drummer boys are still used to honor people. I saw it myself preaching a crusade over there. Honor is not about working to be accepted, it is recognition of someone of whom they appreciate for any number of reasons. This is a cultural thing we would struggle to understand in the US.

    I disagree.

I have no gift to bring
That's fit to give a king.

    Shall I play for you?
    . . .
I played my best for him.
    Then He smile at me.
    Me and my drum.

Do you believe that is what the magi did?

Not at all. I think the Magi recognized His Person and brought gifts that testified to that fact, as did the faithful Israelite bringing a bull or corn to the priests.

Well the song says the boy's intentions were to honor Him. How is that any different?

I consider it a World War II secular song. I take it with a grain of salt.
