I think this guy has gone completely off the rails, theologically speaking.

And I was rather astonished that an SBC pastor would fall victim to the Mormons.

They first gathered in Kirtland, Ohio, and established an outpost in Independence, Missouri, which was intended to be Zion's "center place". During the 1830s, Smith sent out missionaries, published revelations, and supervised construction of the expensive Kirtland Temple. Nevertheless, the collapse of the church-sponsored Kirtland Safety Society and violent skirmishes with non-Mormon Missourians caused Smith and his followers to establish a new settlement at Nauvoo, Illinois, where he became a spiritual and political leader. In 1844, Smith and the Nauvoo city council angered non-Mormons by destroying a newspaper that had criticized Smith's power and practice of polygamy.[4] After Smith was imprisoned in Carthage, Illinois, he was killed when a mob stormed the jailhouse.

What leads you to believe he's run off the rails theologically? You say this as though he's "recently" embraced....

Have you seen or heard where he's embraced Mormon doctrine?

I believe Bible-believing Christians and Book of Mormon Christians have far more in common than all our differences,"... Really?... I can think of a lot of differences between Mormons and Baptist... Isn't being married on Earth enough... This is not a slight against any Women... But the scriptures plainly state that we are neither married or given in marriage in Heaven... Anyone who has studied Joseph Smith knows he loved his women and passed his polygamy down to others... And that is just one point and there are many more to numerous to discuss... Brother Glen

To be fair, the Community of Christ is what was formerly known as Reorganized LDS. They split from the LDS Church because of polygamy. And thet get really adamant that they are not Mormon.

I once asked an RLDS friend of mine if he believed the Book of Mormon to be scripture and if he believed Joseph Smith to be a prophet. He said "yes I do". I said "'nuff said, you're a Mormon."

We didn't talk for an hour, and the first words were his - "I'm not Mormon."

There are also many RLDS who embrace a Trinitarian view of God, and who legitimately believe salvation is by grace, through faith in the finished work of Christ. But they're still somehow convinced that the BOM of scripture.

That's why I asked Rob why he believes Ridenhour has run off the rails theologically. After all, what he's said is that he sees Protestant doctrine throughout the BOM.

So what you are saying is that Mormons say the BOM and The Holy Bible (I read the KJV) are both the inspired word of God?... My question is if one contradicts the other and I am sure there are many contradictions which one takes precedent?... Brother Glen

As James has said, it boils down to the contradictions which exist between the Bible and BoM.

And looking at canonization, I cannot agree with his views. There were books in circulation, full of gnostic and other heresies, which were purposefully excluded because they weren't the inspired Word of God.

These books still cause trouble today, with people asking about what they've heard exists in the Gospel of SoAndSo. The BoM is just another in a long line of uninspired, wannabe additions.

I don't find it astonishing at all that an SBC pastor would fall victim as you put it. The theological problems of today's laity are a direct result of those who pastor them. And the SBC is filled with such theological problems.

In my opinion, it's not so much that the Book of Mormon contradicts the Bible. Interestingly, large portions of the BoM were copied verbatim from the King James Version.

There are major discrepancies concerning history, archeology, and linguistics.

Why is there Greek influence in something written before Greek was used? The use of words like Christ instead of Messiah, apostle, gospel, etc....the claim that American Indians descended from Jews, when archeological evidence shows they descended from Asians (both bone structure and tools)....the nonsensical ramblings in certain portions, sounding like fortune cookie jargon written by Yoda....the fact that 18th century American literature influenced many portions, et al

It's just not a cohesive work having divine origins

But even still, I don't believe adherence to a particular canon is a requisite for salvation. There are numerous canons today, depending on which part of the world and which church

And you are right, the anachronisms in the BoM are startling. Horses, carts, iron, swords, elephants...
