Interview with Pulpit Committee

This evening I have my first interview with a pulpit committee. I got a call from them out of the blue about two weeks ago saying they had gotten my resume (I'm assuming from the local baptist association, since I didn't send them one.) and had gotten a good recommendation of me from a well known retired pastor in the area (He'd been pastor of the First Baptist Church for 30 years in the county seat and had been serving as the interim at my church until we called a new pastor.) I told the guy who called that I had been divorced thinking that would probably scare them off but it didn't, and I sent the church a sermon CD. It's a full time position at a small country church in the Florida panhandle that includes a parsonage. What questions should I expect them to ask me? I expect them to ask about my salvation, the circumstances of my divorce, but am wondering what other questions to expect? Also, what questions should I ask them?

From someone who has been a Pastor for over 34 years. Don’t lie about anything and be upfront. Make sure they hold the same principles that you do and make sure they want a Pastor and not a wimp lead by the nose by the deacons.

Honestly, there is no telling. Especially in small churches there is no common set of questions. In my experience they will likely expect you to speak of your self in as frank and forth coming manner as you can. I would share with them your thoughts on pastoral leadership in the church, how you plan to get to know the members, what are your priorities as a pastor to a church, and spend some time discussing important doctrinal issues.

I would encourage you to ask as many questions as you can. Do not look at this interview as being one sided meaning they ask you answer. You are also interviewing them. Ask about previous pastors and why they left. (hint: if the bash them let that be a red flag.) Ask about the history of attendance and income (i.e. has it been level, declining or improving). What are their views on evangelism and its priority in their lives. What evidence is their that it is a priority.
