Two years after its installation, the garden was overrun with mealybugs. "People in church on Sunday morning were slapping bugs in the air," Ann Fryberger, chair of the church's garden club, said.
To fix it, they...set off an insecticidal bomb. Nothing worked, until congregant and horticulture student Jennifer Kampf suggested jet-spraying the plants with water....the solution worked...Fryberger has seen two mealybugs in the past two months, and that's a big improvement.
Beth Tamminen of Duluth has been a member of the congregation for 20 years. The space is in line with the seventh principle of Unitarian beliefs, she said, respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. "The mealybugs might be part of creation, but not the part we want inside."
