I'm putting this in the Fundamental Baptist Forum because it references an article by Fundamentalist Kevin Bauder, Food Pharisees.

The worst sins are the ones we do not commit.

rlvaughn..., years ago I attended a Baptist Church and when the pastor took to the podium and began leafing through his Bible to find his place he asked..., "Can anyone name something that's harmful to the body?" Almost everyone raised their hands and he selected an individual who shouted out..., "DRUGS". Amen's broke out across the church and so he asked again. All hands went up, he selected another who shouted out..., "STRONG DRINK". Again, the amen's came from all corners of the church. He asked the third time and the same routine. All hands went up, he selected an individual and the response was..., "TOBACCO", which was followed again by amen's from the congregation. I don't know why but he asked the fourth time and this time..., my hand was the only one that went up! He had to pick me as I was standing alone so I shouted out..., "Gluttony". ...no amen's this time. The place fell silent. Even the mouse took notice. I thought maybe it was my breath or something. No, they didn't seem to be impressed with my response at all.

    From the article:

In short, the biblical vision of gluttony is not one that revolves around overeating or being overweight. A biblical glutton is a wastrel, a spendthrift, and a sluggard whose friends are of the worst sort and who pits riotous, wanton living against God’s righteousness. In short, a biblical glutton is a lawless person whose life revolves around sensual pleasures, who substance is spent on those pleasures, who lacks the self-control to deny himself those pleasures, and who does not care what they cost.
I agree with this to an extent, yet the author says just above that the NT term translated 'glutton' is a word meaning 'eater.' A glutton is basically a consumer, not of food exclusively, but of all sorts of pleasures.

Lest you think this article has hallowed your sitting with a bucket of the Colonel's eleven herbs and spices while taking in a Spaghetti Western, the Scriptures condemn excess in everything, and calls those who indulge in an excess of food, drunkards. Ecclesiastes 10:17

Then does it follow that the best sins are the ones we do commit?

Why they aren't sins at all - just mistakes or errors in judgement.

But if I can point out a sin worse than mine, it takes the heat off of me, right?

(This is sarcasm, if anyone is wondering.)

“What you would do, if you could do, God counts it as done.”

Sin is not just the overt act.

Gluttony is the sin of lack of control.

I wonder if Bauder is making excuse for his own excessive weight?

"And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares." Luke 21:34

This is the only time this word appears in the New Testament in English or in Greek. This goes beyond gluttony, in my opinion.

Last saw Dr. Bauder about four years ago, at a conference in NH, and he didn't appear all that portly at the time. :Biggrin
(And I greatly learned from his presentations.)
