I have kind of gone back and forth on this most my adult life. It came up in discussion tonight at Bible Study.
The cliche "God hates the sin but loves the sinner" gets thrown around almost as doctrine. Is it correct?
Psam 15:4
Romans 9: 6-13
Psalm 5:5

I think it would be helpful to define the word "hate" in its biblical context. We use hate differently in our vernacular.

I believe God hates all sinners. But because he is love, he set his love on those he arbitrarily chose to save. Had there been something lovable in us, we would share in his glory. But his love is full when he mercifully saves those whom he hates. But in giving us a new nature, he can now love us subjectively because of the work he performed in us.

I think the problem is we sometimes see divine wrath (or hatred) as a human emotion. Perhaps God's hate is to be taken as His love - as descriptive of action (e.g., God loved the world by sending His Son).

What exactly does hate mean here?
There is no ambiguity in the Hebrew word שׂנאת (pronounced "sa-ne"). It means to "hate" and is explained in the previous verse quite well, where it references wickedness and evil.

The word to closely examine is the word פעל translated as "workers" or "doers" and indicates an habitual, continuing action.

I'm tracking...so, would it be fair to say that hate means to find no pleasure in something?

I think it would be helpful to define the word "hate" in its biblical context. We use hate differently in our vernacular.

[Gen 26:27 NASB] 27 Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate[H8130] me and have sent me away from you?"
[Gen 29:31, 33 NASB] 31 Now the LORD saw that Leah was unloved,[H8130] and He opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. ... 33 Then she conceived again and bore a son and said, "Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved,[H8130] He has therefore given me this [son] also." So she named him Simeon.
[Gen 37:4-5, 8 NASB] 4 His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and [so] they hated[H8130] him and could not speak to him on friendly terms. 5 Then Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated[H8130] him even more. ... 8 Then his brothers said to him, "Are you actually going to reign over us? Or are you really going to rule over us?" So they hated[H8130] him even more for his dreams and for his words.
[Exo 20:5 NASB] 5 "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate[H8130] Me,
[Lev 19:17 NASB] 17 'You shall not hate[H8130] your fellow countryman in your heart; you may surely reprove your neighbor, but shall not incur sin because of him.
[Lev 26:17 NASB] 17 'I will set My face against you so that you will be struck down before your enemies; and those who hate[H8130] you will rule over you, and you will flee when no one is pursuing you.
[Deu 7:10 NASB] 10 but repays those who hate[H8130] Him to their faces, to destroy them; He will not delay with him who hates[H8130] Him, He will repay him to his face.
[Deu 12:31 NASB] 31 "You shall not behave thus toward the LORD your God, for every abominable act which the LORD hates[H8130] they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.
[Deu 16:22 NASB] 22 "You shall not set up for yourself a [sacred] pillar which the LORD your God hates.[H8130]
[Deu 19:11 NASB] 11 "But if there is a man who hates[H8130] his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises up against him and strikes him so that he dies, and he flees to one of these cities,
[Deu 22:13 NASB] 13 "If any man takes a wife and goes in to her and [then] turns[H8130] against[H8130] her,
[Deu 32:41 NASB] 41 If I sharpen My flashing sword, And My hand takes hold on justice, I will render vengeance on My adversaries, And I will repay those who hate[H8130] Me.
[2Sa 13:15, 22 NASB] 15 Then Amnon hated[H8130] her with a very great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated[H8130] her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, "Get up, go away!" ... 22 But Absalom did not speak to Amnon either good or bad; for Absalom hated[H8130] Amnon because he had violated his sister Tamar.
[Psa 5:5 NASB] 5 The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes; You hate[H8130] all who do iniquity.
[Psa 11:5 NASB] 5 The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked, And the one who loves violence His soul hates.[H8130]
[Psa 25:19 NASB] 19 Look upon my enemies, for they are many, And they hate[H8130] me with violent hatred.
[Psa 26:5 NASB] 5 I hate[H8130] the assembly of evildoers, And I will not sit with the wicked.
[Psa 31:6 NASB] 6 I hate[H8130] those who regard vain idols, But I trust in the LORD.
[Psa 34:21 NASB] 21 Evil shall slay the wicked, And those who hate[H8130] the righteous will be condemned.
[Psa 45:7 NASB] 7 You have loved righteousness and hated[H8130] wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your fellows.
[Psa 97:10 NASB] 10 Hate[H8130] evil, you who love the LORD, Who preserves the souls of His godly ones; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
[Psa 101:3 NASB] 3 I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; I hate[H8130] the work of those who fall away; It shall not fasten its grip on me.
[Psa 119:113 NASB] 113 Samekh. I hate[H8130] those who are double-minded, But I love Your law.
[Psa 139:21-22 NASB] 21 Do I not hate[H8130] those who hate[H8130] You, O LORD? And do I not loathe those who rise up against You? 22 I hate[H8130] them with the utmost hatred; They have become my enemies.
[Pro 6:16 NASB] 16 There are six things which the LORD hates,[H8130] Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
[Pro 8:13, 36 NASB] 13 "The fear of the LORD is to hate[H8130] evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverted mouth, I hate.[H8130] ... 36 "But he who sins against me injures himself; All those who hate[H8130] me love death."
[Pro 13:24 NASB] 24 He who withholds his rod hates[H8130] his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently.
[Ecc 3:8 NASB] 8 A time to love and a time to hate;[H8130] A time for war and a time for peace.
[Isa 1:14 NASB] 14 "I hate[H8130] your new moon [festivals] and your appointed feasts, They have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing [them.]
[Jer 44:4 NASB] 4 'Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets, again and again, saying, "Oh, do not do this abominable thing which I hate."[H8130]
[Hos 9:15 NASB] 15 All their evil is at Gilgal; Indeed, I came to hate[H8130] them there! Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of My house! I will love them no more; All their princes are rebels.
[Amo 5:15 NASB] 15 Hate[H8130] evil, love good, And establish justice in the gate! Perhaps the LORD God of hosts May be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
[Amo 6:8 NASB] 8 The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself, the LORD God of hosts has declared: "I loathe the arrogance of Jacob, And detest[H8130] his citadels; Therefore I will deliver up [the] city and all it contains."
[Mal 1:3 NASB] 3 but I have hated[H8130] Esau, and I have made his mountains a desolation and [appointed] his inheritance for the jackals of the wilderness."
[Mal 2:16 NASB] 16 "For I hate[H8130] divorce," says the LORD, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with wrong," says the LORD of hosts. "So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously."

So, is anyone going to define hate? this is quite the awkward thread.

In scripture we are told by Jesus to love our enemies, and pray for those who despitefully use and persecute us... Then there is this scripture in the Psalms... Mixed message?... Brother Glen:)

Psalms 139:21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

139:22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.

So, is anyone going to define hate? this is quite the awkward thread.
Do you mean OTHER than how God used it in the quoted scriptures?
I have no intention of offering a different definition.

Hate reflects a desire to send the person you hate away from you (Gen 26:27) and would reflect the state of being unloved, like Leah, that set the tone for Jacobs household and the evil that followed (Gen 29:31, 33). Hate reflects the attitude of Joseph's brothers towards him, acted upon in a desire to kill him and in eventually selling him into slavery ... that is "hate" (Gen 37). Hate reflects the attitude of a man who hides and kills his neighbor (Deu 19:11). Hate reflects the attitude of Absalom towards Amnon for violating his sister Tamar; so he killed them all! (2Sa 13:22).

God associates several other words with his hatred ... God "strikes down" those he hates (Lev 26:17) ... God "destroys" those who hate Him (Deu 7:10) ... God hates "every abominable act" like burning children as a sacrifice (Deu 12:31) ... God renders "justice" with a sword against those who hate Him (Deu 32:41) ... God hates "the one who loves violence" (Psa 11:5) ... Loving righteousness and hating wickedness are two sides of the same coin (Psa 45:7) ... a man after God's heart will hate evildoers with "the uttermost hatred" (Psa 139:21-22) ... That which God hates is an "abomination" to Him (Pro 6:16) ... That which God hates He is weary of the burden of enduring its existence (Isa 1:14) ... When the patience of God's mercy is exhausted, God will "love them no more", drive them away from Himself and hate them (Hos 9:15) ... God's hatred also means "loathe" (Amo 6:8).

So just what do YOU think God means when He says that He hates something?
(The word seems unambiguous to me.)

To be honest, i'm not sure how to define hate as translated in the Scriptures. Sometimes it means "to be angry against with just cause." I do know this, however, that the way in which God hates is perfect, and we fall short of being able to do so. That is probably why Jesus said, "You have heard it be said 'love your neighbor, but hate your enemy.' But i tell you to love your enemies."
