Advantages & disadvantages of homeschooling

Advantages: The child receivesa proper education in everything he/she will need to earn a living, & in a Christian home, the environment is proper. Education can go on all year long.The parents or tutor has all the time needed is the child is having difficulty with a subject. The child can learn at his/her own speed.

Disadvantages: The main one is that the child is restricted in his/her interaction with other children, and to exposure to many of the cultures present in this nation. In some places, he/she can't participate in many sports & group activities present in public schools. (However, this has been largely eliminated, with homeschooled children being permitted to participate in the sports & extracurricular activities of the schools in whose district they live.) Social interaction is often limited.

It's certainly a matter which should be prayed about! And let's NEVER forget that a child's RELIGIOUS education is up to the PARENTS !

I'll take exception to the proper education. Some homeschoolers receive a wonderful education and go on do and be great things. Others - not so much.

One could say the same for Christian schools, charter public schools, private schools, and traditional public schools. Many successes. Many - well, many not-so-successful outcomes.

Case in point: I have a young friend who is homeschooling her three young girls.

She came to me a while back absolutely THRILLED that her two-year old "knows all of her prepositions". She went on and on about it implying how brilliant the child was. I just weakly smiled. They learn everything by rote and by singing lists of things.

I wanted to ask, but did not because it would be rude -

• Does she know what a preposition is and how it is used?
• Does she understand sentence structure?
• Can she write a sentence or even just formulate one with prepositions contained within and can she discern and explain what makes the prepositions different from the other words in a that sentence?

I can cite examples like this from all forms of schools as I've worked with and in all kinds.

The success depends on the curriculum, the competency of the teacher, and the consistency of that competent teaching.

My wife(& sometimes I) watch ree Drummond, the "Pioneer Woman" on TV. She homeschooled her kids, & the oldest ones are in college. She and her hubby Ladd are both college grads, & if you watch the show, you see they're both quite-articulate.

One eppy showed some highlights of her homeschooling, & they each had textboox & workboox, with study time being just that, with no cellphones, TVs or radios being used. And on other eps we see her kids had plenty of friends their age, played organized sports, etc.

Her main reason for homeschooling is their remoteness from schools, as they live in ranch country, with "next-door neighbors' being miles away.

Because of the extent to which Christianity is under attack in the public school systems, several prominent voices have been advocating parents avoid them for the sake of their children.

The indoctrination has intensified to the point that now they even counsel avoiding public colleges and universities, excepting those specially called to witness who are entirely unconcerned how expressing their faith might affect their grades.

Having taught in a Christian school for almost 20 years (JH & SH level), I can say for a fact that there can be some minuses that need to be realistically examined for parents. If they've not consistently drummed into not only their child's heart and mind the realities of today's educational mind set, but also in their own hearts & minds the somewhat bleak options we all face, enrolling one's teenager into a Christian school per se is NOT the panacea for most youths. Yes, every once in a while I'd find a young person (& here again I was teaching in a "Bible-Belt" Christian school almost 30 yrs ago) who did turn out to be one who was serious about serving the Lord in his/her capacity. BUT these were few & far-between EXCEPTIONS. As was previously mentioned in other posts, if a parent isn't willing to set aside her/his prime-time TV sit coms to lovingly educate the children God has blessed them with, one cannot depend solely on a Christian school to take up ALL your slack. God gives the parents to "train up a child in the way he should go," NOT some Christian school nearby!! A good Christian school can ASSIST in her/his development, but will never REPLACE what wasn't their duty in the first place. Yes a good Christian school can & should supplement what training a child ought to receive from Dad & Mom, but to expect that Christian school to be essentially a miracle working organization is expected what it never should be obligated to perform. It all boils down to one's priorities a parent must have when that little bundle of joy comes home to her/his parents. Helping is one thing, but to expect a ministry to take a place God never deemed that it should is.......to call God A LIAR!! Yeah, I said it, & with all the Christian charity I can muster up within me, YOU, Dad & Mom need to put first things first.....PERIOD....EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!
