I like the 1977 version of the New American Standard translation. I also like the English Standard translation but the New American Standard is my daily driver.

Yes, they're both so good, aren't they?

They are. While I prefer the New American Standard, all the major translations contain what is necessary for godly living.

Indeed. I just can't decide between the two for the purpose of reading or studying a more functional equivalence translation. :)

I can certainly see why the ESV would be preferable for preaching.

Prefer the 1977 Nas when doing serious studies, and take the Esv for church bible and more casual reading!

There seems to have been something lost between the 1977 and the 1995 revision of Nas, as new one not quite up to the older edition in some ways! Hope that the 2020 revision does not go big time into gender inclusive renderings!

I have an ESV and a NAS, but I prefer the NAS. One day during a small group Bible study, I was asked to read Proverbs 23:7 out of the ESV, which read this way - for he is like one who is inwardly calculating. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you. Afterwards the Pastor leading the small group Bible study was like, huh?

The NAS reads - For as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you.

In this instance, I guess I'm different. The first one (from the ESV) actually makes more sense to me than the second one (from the NAS).

Therefore, in my case at least, it's the NAS that makes me think, "Huh?"

So I'd really be interested in knowing what others here think about the example you furnished us! :)

I believe the ESV to be easier understood there.

While the OP did not consider the KJV, I would like to share a recent "revelation" between the ESV and the KJV.

Luk 2:14 KJV - Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Luk 2:14 ESV - "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!"

The presenter said that a Greek(?) letter discovered in latter transcripts, and used in the ESV, changed the verse as noted.

To me, it is a most significant change, resulting in me adopting the ESV as my preferred translation rather than the KJV.

In fairness, the NASB has that same rendering esssentially.

makes biblical sense, as the favor of God would be just towards his own people!
