Do you think the second coming is already near? Considering what is happening around us-the pandemic, volcano eruptions , earthquakes and forest fires.

 

Jesus said those things were “birth pains”. Just the beginning of the end.

Jesus told us to live our lives as if He could return this very minute, not trying to determine the exact date.

Yes, you're right. We must live our lives and not worry when will He return. I just keep on thinking it maybe any sooner but, I'll try to get that off my mind.

 

On the contrary, we must live our lives in readiness for Christ's return (Matthew 24:42-44). I think that was the point that @canadyjd was making.

How could you reconcile the difference between the 6th hour of Matthew 27:45, Mk 15:33, Lk 23:44 and the 6th hour of John 19:14? Because the previous 3 indicate that it was 6th hour when the darkness came, while John 19:14 says it was the 6th hour before Pilate delivered the verdict?
I really have had some difficulty with this.

John wrote to a more Roman audience. Matthew, Mark and Luke used Hebrew reckoning John used Roman. So the 6th hour was our 6am. The 6th hour in Hebrew hours is noon.

 

You are right, even in your choice of military service! This is one thing that our primarily Roman-based culture often seems to neglect. EX: After I was saved (& BTW, tomorrow, April 23, will mark my 55th REbirthday!) I couldn't figure out why God's Word used the phrase, "...and the evening and the morning were..." Then a missionary to the Jewish who was a member of that church of which I belonged told me why. Usually, the Jews use a lunar (moon-based) method to determine times & days. OTOH, most Roman-based cultures use a solar (sun-based method. That's why Easter moves from one year to another, and the same can be applied to almost all the Jewish feasts (e.g., Yom Kippur [The day of Atonement].) Moreover, this seems to be one reason why Matthew and Luke sometimes record the same event or teaching somewhat differently---They were writing to different cultures. Moreover, if one doesn't know these cultural differences, he/she can sometimes wonder why we have unusual passages in both the OT & NT. This is one principle for understanding hermeneutics (Who was Hermen anyway?). I'm no expert in interpreting many Bible passages, but, as this one so-called expert in Bible application(s) replied, "It's not so much that I don't understand SOME things about what my Bible tells me to do, It's those places where I DO know what says to do that bother me!" Can I get me a witness?!!

 

I guessed so, though I am not sure this is all the answer to such question. The late Dr. Cassidy once mentioned there should be a certain difference between the time practice of Jerusalem and that of Galilee
