Many churches closing

in some cases you are correct - but IMHO - it is because they are not evangelistic!
Because they don't want extra members in their social club unless they are a certain type.
or is it because churches are purging their membership roles.
How many people have churched hopped and been a member of 5 or 6 churches -
without moving membership.
Not saying that is the entire reason - but could be part of it.
Lets keep in mind that there are usually several reasons for an action -
but those who are involved in a certain cause will try to use stats to their advantage.
That doesn't happen much in SBC. SBC Churches put high priority in "moving the letter".
I can tell by the parking lots that churches around here are as a whole in decline.
This is especially true in The Episcopal Church. The Episcopal Church lost four entire dioceses after they joined the conservative Anglican Church of North America. The Episcopal Church continues to count those churches and members among their numbers. Many of their churches are on life-support or closing all together. Some are merging with ELCA congregations with which they share pulpit and altar fellowship with.

When was the last time that you heard a convicting message. To many of our "fellow" Christians just want to have a quiet time in Church. It's don't make me feel bad by telling me about my sin just pat me on the back and tell me I'm good to go. My ticket to heaven has been punched so no worries.

According to the OP, which is pre-COVID (feel free to respond with corrections):
Christianity is still alive and well in the US. However, many so-called mainline denominations are in sharp decline. This is primarily due to their becoming increasingly liberal, aka secular and worldly in doctrine and practice, the embracement and incorporation of homosexuality being a significant factor. They seem oblivious to their obvious plight. Members are leaving for more biblically based churches, many of which are non-denominational.
The SBC was growing but has seen some decline much more recently. The PCA has grown. The AG (USA) has grown. The Anglican Church in North America was started for dissatisfied Episcopalians. The EFCA has grown. The non-denominational block is the third largest, after the "Roman" Catholics and the SBC, and is growing.
