Question concerning cessation

Many Baptists present tongues and prophecy ceased.

In discussions, I have never heard a Baptist acknowledge knowledge ceasing.

8Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Does knowledge get a pass?

Does knowledge cease and the redeemed enter eternity Tabula rasa?

Should believer’s continue to “study to show ourselves approved…” or be content in ignorance?

Just for the record, my personal view is that God can do what He desires or not, it is not up to me to proclaim something ceased, especially considering the only “perfect” in this human time frame is the millennium.

The answer to this is to look at the context. Verse 2 of this chapter and verse 6 of the next show us that the "knowledge" here is not generic but spiritually-gifted. This special knowledge came to an end along with the other special gifts.

I understand four gifts of the Spirit are referred to in 1 Corinthians 13:8. Two gifts in 1 Corinthians 13:9.

1 Corinthians 13:10, ". . .But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away."

In verse 8 only two of the speaking gifts are said to be done away. The gifts of tongues to cease, that is, inoperative.

In verse 9 those two speaking gifts are said to be in part.

Now in James 1:17, we find this, ". . . Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. . . ."

The interpertation being with the giving of the Revelation 22:19, ". . . unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, . . ." no other revelations are to be given. And so with the understand what was already give being "perfect" (James 1:25) the giving of the instruction not to add to the hearing of the Revelation would be understood to mean the prefection of the speaking gifts, causing tongues to cease. The value of tongues being in those two speaking gifts, 1 Corinthians 13:9, 1 Corinthians 14:6.

On a side note, because this thread isn’t really about prophecy or tongues, but knowledge, the tongues were not prophecy, but the people hearing the spoken words of the preaching in their own language(s).
Also, note that the tongues and prophecy is done away with in part, but not do not cease completely..
Knowledge though is done away with in total.

Did not Peter give a list of attributes believers should incorporate to attain, including virtue, knowledge, self control…

As believers mature in the Scriptures, does not those same Scripture present a heightened wisdom and understanding?

Is this knowledge completely done away?

The knowledge Peter mentions, as well as the rest of these attributes, are to be part of all Christians life. But the knowledge in I Corinthians 13 is different. The context there shows it.

Only two gifts in my understanding were said to be in part. Which I understand to be the gifts of prophecy and the word of knowledge. Note not knowledge but the spoken gift of the word of knowledge. As a result of the spoken gifts of prophecy and spoken word of knowledge being done away with by their perfect form in the written word of God with the seal not to add to the hearing of revelation the book being called Revelation of Jesus Christ. Brought an end to the spoken word of God except for the word of wisdom. Effectively also ending tongues, 1 Corinthians 14:6.

The two spoken gifts were those gifts in part. The close of Scritpure with the giving of the book of Revelation perfected those two gifts which were the only ones said to be in part. 1 Corinthians 13:9, James 1:17. Again, my understanding of 1 Corinthians 13:8-10, Revelation 1:1-3 and Revelation 22:18.

There is no declaration of any cessation of any gifts in scripture. Some may want to take that to mean that one must then believe they are all currently active. That is not true.

I agree.

Too many consider the tongues and prophecy as how the charismatic determine the matter. They and that is not nor ever been the presentation of Scripture.

The knowledge part seems ignored, though, or repositioned into something “special.” Again, it is my own opinion this thinking is not correct, either.
