There are types of people who profess to be in Christ; those who are truly in Him and those who are not in Him. This has always been the situation since the beginning of Christianity, and the false professors are the hypocrites who will inevitably manifest that they do not truly believe by apostatizing (leaving or departing) from their false profession, for only those truly reborn (saved) never cease their profession in the Christian walk. Hypocrites are those whom the Lord Jesus said that “this people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoureth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me” (never reborn - Mat 15:8).

The difference between true and false professors is important to identify, and is why the Lord said “the tree is known by his fruit” (Mat 12:33). One of the primary functions of Scripture is to teach believers how to identify those who nominally profess to believe, which eventually show itself outwardly by their lifestyle. Those who are not truly saved always give up, and those truly saved never give up; and this is seen in the parable of the sower in which only one of the examples presented is saved.

When Scripture speaks of those falling away, departing, etc., it refers to false professors who never continue professing to be living in the faith (not falling from the faith but from their false profession of it), because it requires the Spirit creating one in rebirth to be saved and remain. One of the reasons why many people practice false professions (many unaware it’s false until later) is to attempt to ease their conscience by and outward show so that they will be accepted, as guilt always attempts to seek self-justification.

Continuing in professing Christianity does not produce salvation but shows one is saved, for only one who is saved will continue without ceasing. Inwardly we are assured by the Sprit that we are saved (Rom 8:16); outwardly we will manifest this by God’s love for one another (Jhn 13:35). Not our natural love which is to others in the same degree we love ourselves (Mat 22:39), but in the love we have of Christ to others (Jhn 13:34), as this is what makes love to others a “new command.”

I believe one important reason why there are false professors is to outwardly affirm the true professors, just as the Tree of Knowledge was to affirm God’s holiness via contrast of good and evil (He wants us to know His holiness); and as the wheat and the tares bear resemblance when young, they can be distinguished when the ears of grain begin to show in the wheat.

You may be right, but we also have to be careful. I believe there has to be some distinctions made between those who are false professors and those who are professors but yet babes in Christ and need to be shepherd. A genuine false professor knows in their heart they really don't believe and their fruits will eventually prove they do not believe. But there are also true professors which are still not showing any fruit bearing because they have not matured enough to.

"Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn." (Matt 13)

Thanks for your reply and comments. Yes, the distinctions are necessary, as the Lord Jesus gave multiple references to this, e.g. Mat 7:20 et al. Of course the most important issue t is maintaining the right motive (love for the person).

Peter gave an instruction on how to make sure of one's faith.

2 Peter 1:2-11, "Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ."

Good stuff! It's also encouraging to know that our primary assurance is the "Spirit Himself" (Ro 8:16).

I always look at the fruit, how it aligns with scripture. I've been in churches before where the fruit consists of not smoking, or dancing, or going to movies, or what have you? But what scripture defines as fruit is missing for the most part. These are fervent believers in their ideas about Christ, but I question their relationship with the true Christ.

One really huge identifier of someone who knows Christ is found in John's words.
“Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.” 2 John 9 (KJV 1900)

And Mattew closes the Sermon on the Mount with these words.

“And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:” Matthew 7:28 (KJV 1900)

Few if any walk in the light of the Sermon on the Mount today.

    Yes, it is TRUE.

The Bible is full of such criticism and pointed out how far people can go in order to push their own agenda and to turn masses from true teachings of GOD for the sake of their own gain.

    Psalm of David 11.2-3

2.They speak falsehood to one another, with flattering lips and with a double heart they speak.

3.May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that speaks great things,

    Isaiah 29.13

13.The Lord said, "Because these people draw near with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, while their hearts are far from Me, and their worship of Me is a human commandment learned by rote,"

    Ezekiel 33.31

31."They come to you as people come, and they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words but they will not obey them. Flattery is on their lips, but their heart is set on their gain." (Isaiah 29.13) (Matthew 15.7-9) (Mark 7.6-7)

    Romans 16.18

18.Such people do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the simple-minded.

    2Peter 2.2-3

2.Even so, many will follow licentious ways, and because of these teachers the way of truth will be maligned.

3.And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words. Their condemnation pronounced against them long ago has not been idle and their destruction is not asleep.

    Jude 1.16

16.These are grumblers and malcontents, they indulge their own lusts, they are bombastic in speech, flattering people to their own advantage.

“Once saved always saved” (aka preservation of the saints) is a false teaching.

You can forfeit/lose the gift of salvation. There is a distinction between mortal and venial sin or sins commission and omission...etc.

The Bible clearly states that we can have assurance in salvation and it also clearly states, that it is possible to fall into apostasy. God does not have anyone in a holy headlock, whereas, it is impossible to apostate. There is a paradox, you cannot selectively, say one set of passages are true, then rationalize and explain away, the warning passages as not be true. Both are true.

There are conditional statements in the Bible.

Rom 8:16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Rom 8:17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Col 1:21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,
Col 1:22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,
Col 1:23 IF indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister

    Shipwrecked faith.

1Ti 1:19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith,
1Ti 1:20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Shipwrecked faith. They had faith...It is not saying they had a false faith, but had faith and made shipwreck of their faith.

Then you have the Hebrews warning passages, etc. There are text throughout the Bible that clearly warn that a Christian can fall away from faith. There is venial and moral sin. That is why a baptized saint lives in daily repentance and need for Christ alone.

Sacred scripture and the historic church has never taught that at a Christian cannot apostate and forfeit the gift of salvation.

Appreciate your reply and comments! Here we have 1Ti 1:5: "Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned." This demonstrates that one's faith can be feigned or false, which always manifests itself in inconsistency, then eventually cessation. Only true faith will be consistent and unceasing, proving all along the sureness of true faith.

It's very sad to say, but in my understanding the sad reality is that the PRIMITIVE CHURCH of the Lord JESUS in Rome, established or instituted by the Apostles of the LORD, mainly Paul Apostle, author of epistle to the Romans, yeah, the PRIMITIVE CHURCH in Rome was and is the BIRTHPLACE or the CRADLE of ANTICHRIST - See how

Romans 16:v. 20 - And the GOD of peace SHALL BRUISE SATAN UNDER YOUR FEET SHORTLY. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

The author of the epistle to the Romans, Paul Apostle, after his conversion to Christianity was arrested in Cesareia, he made his own defense at his Judgment. The Jews asked to the governor called Festus to send Paul to Jerusalem, but Paul told no one could turn him over to the Jews (Paul knew that the Jews wanted to kill him), then, when he finished his defense, he appealed to Caesar at his Judgment. "Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go-Acts 25:v.12. Paul's journey to Italy-Rome was full of obstacles and difficulties for his survival, and at great risk of losing his life, but GOD was with him and kept him, and he arrived in Rome safe and sound after several months of great sufferings.

The Apostle Paul, whose name was originally Saul, was a Jew from a very orthodox line of Pharisaism. He was a student of Gamaliel, but unlike his mentor, he was known for his persecution of Christians. Paul also had Roman citizenship, he was born in Tarsus, the capital of Cilicia, this was and made a great difference in his ministry. Cilicia is an early Roman province on what is today the southern coast of Turkey.

There were many many Jews in Rome, and the fame of a new "religion or sect" planted by JESUS in Israel was spreading everywhere. Three days after he arrived in Rome, Paul called the Jewish leaders in Rome, as a result, many Jews in Rome came to visit him, and Paul explained that he was arrested because of his faith in Israel's hope. They decided to hear more (Acts 28:17-22), and a large number of Jews gathered at Paul's house, and he tried to convince them about Jesus (28:23) and the Kingdom of God, there was a division among the Jews, some believing and others rejecting the Word (28:24-29).

Paul said to the Jews of the church in Rome: Romans 2:v.1-11
1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
2 But we are sure that the Judgment of GOD is according to Truth against them which commit such things.
3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the Judgment of GOD?
    5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous Judgment of GOD;
6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
    9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
11 There is no respect of persons with God.

Then the Church of our Lord JESUS developed itself in Rome, and Satan in parallel worked too. Thus Paul was concerned about the apostasy in the Church of Rome, he took very care for the spiritual development of the brothers in Rome. Paul gave his last instructions and admonitions to the brothers of the Church in Rome, warning them of an apostate movement mainly by Jews among the brothers, even in the Church of the Lord there established by him and other apostles. Rom.16:17-20:

-17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause DIVISIONS and offences CONTRARY TO THE DOCTRINE which ye have learned; and AVOID THEM.
18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by GOOD WORDS and FAIR SPEECHES DECEIVE the hearts of the simple.
19 For YOUR OBEDIENCE is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.
20 And the God of peace SHALL BRUISE SATAN UNDER YOUR FEET SHORTLY.THIS WILL FULFILL LIETERALLY FROM NOW ON-HALLELUJAH!

John Apostle also wrote about the apostasy mainly about the PRIMITIVE and TRUE CHURCH of the LORD in Rome, as follow:

1 John 2:v.19 - They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that THEY WERE NOT ALL OF US.
It is very interesting this revelation of the Apostle John concerning the primitive and genuine Church of the LORD in Rome, which apostatized even in the time of the Apostles, mainly the Jewish believers linked politically to the Roman Empire, and the Church was called Catholic Church, and become a CORRUPTED CHURCH in the hands of Satan, and is until TODAY.

Again: "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that THEY WERE NOT ALL OF US"-1John 2:v.19-then they started to persecute the true Churches of the LORD, they killed the Apostles Paul and Peter among others. By the way, notice that Revelation describes (year 95AD and 65 years after JESUS's ascension)the spiritual conditions of the 7 Churches of Asia, but the Church of Rome, denominated Catholic Church, and LATER Roman Catholic Church, which would be the eighth, it was excluded because was totally in the hands of the Devil, and would be according Scriptures the Seat of Satan, the headquarter of the body of Devil, the idolater, apostate, and devilish church of Rome.

And now, even now, with the manifestation of the MAN Beast of earth with two horns like a lamb, a false lamb, a Jewish false messiah (John 5:v.43-47 combined with Revelation 13:v.11) but speaks as Dragon, then there will be two Beasts reigning on the Earth, one in Rome and another in Jerusalem, as Paul apostle warned, saying; 2Thes.2:v.3 to 12:

    3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (He who is not of the Lord, Satan will take with him, and there will be a battle: Revelation 12:v.7-17 and 16:v.13-16).

And ONE of the 7 heads of the satanic and religious MONSTER guided by the Beast of sea will be wounded to death by the Sword, and his wound will be healed by the MAN Beast of earth, the son of perdition, the little horn, who was born from one of the 10 tribes of Israel, the tribe of Dan, he is already living in his country, and must manifest himself soon. And he, even he himself, will give to the Beast of sea-the Pope-his Power, and his Seat in Jerusalem, spiritually called Sodom and Egypt, and great Authority, and the wound of the head of the Beast of sea will be healed by the false messiah of the Jews-John 5:v.43-47 combined with Revelation 13:v.3.

But as said the Apostle Paul, the GOD of peace SHALL BRUISE SATAN UNDER YOUR FEET SHORTLY. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all . Amen.

THE PUNISHMENT OF THE ANCIENT AND CORRUPT CHURCH OF ROME FROM NOW ON -
    THE WORD IS GOD

The OP betrays shocking ignorance of personal acquaintance with many so-called more liberal Christian professors and their devout faith in Christ. The author needs to season his penchant for bluster with a modicum of intellectual rigor by addressing the actual rationales for alleged more liberal positions rather than simply pontificating fundamentalist talking points from a myopic and carefully sheltered evangelical agenda. I have served as a more liberal theology professor for several years, and yet, I have gone across eastern Canada witnessing to the Gospel in the street and door to door. Can the thread's author claim the same?
I will shortly start a thread on the resurrection that exposes precisely what I mean. So stay tuned.

    RESURRECTION?

It will occur now, even now, in the current time. Maybe there will be a super and strong earthquake over the Planet, a similar event as happened when our LORD was crucified.

    1 Thessalonians 4:v. 13 to 15 combined with Daniel 12:v.1-3

13 I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.

15 For this we say unto you by the Word of the Lord - the Word is GOD - , that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel - MICHAEL - , and with the trump of GOD: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

    Matthew 27:v.50-54
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

    51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

53 And came out of the graves after resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

Much reproach has been brought on the Gospel by irresponsible claims about when Jesus will return like yours.
My pastor uncle told me about an unbeliever he knew who exclaimed about a man's procrastination, "He's as slow as the 2nd Coming of Christ!"

What prevails is the Word of GOD. The Word is GOD, understand? YOU MUST WAKE UP.

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. (Pastors, Bishops, Evangelists, among others. )

10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. (This event is invisible. It is necessary to know the signals, if not... well ...)

11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Matthews 25:v.1 to 12

Sad, very sad. Them which were to buy oil and all them which were selling it, they all lost their souls FOR EVER.

Luke 18:v.8 - Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

    I can't reconcile that with John 10:28-30

and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

seems to me ... if you are in Jesus' hand ... HE will not let you go.

I believe the apostasy is of social group church people ... the false church ... the whore church membership. probably even nephilim whose purpose is to distract and deter.

Not the saints; which includes those with only a "fire insurance" policy ... "babes in the faith" as is described.

I believe the difference in the Overcomer and the beheaded will be their being ready to receive the ultimate outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The double-minded man or the spiritual Christian. Both will be with Jesus forever, but one has to be purified ... the other lives the victory in that instant being changed from the corruptible body to the incorrruptible.
