I have Poole, MacArthur, I definitely own Gill, as well as part of Calvin's commentary - I will look into Lloyd-Jones though, I was unaware that he had put out any commentaries. One series I've been picking up a copy or two of is the "reformation commentary on the scriptures" are you familiar with it? Thank you!

If both of you skip meals every other day for a month and do just two meals a day on your eating days, you'll be able to afford it in a month.

Are you content reading commentaries that are more than 150 years old?

Are you looking for a study Bible commentary, a single volume commentary or a multi volume set?
Are you interested in a particular topic, or a particular book of the Bible?
Are you looking for a devotional commentary, a pastoral commentary or a critical academic commentary?
Do you want your commentary to be based upon a particular Bible version?
Are you interested in exploring a diversity of interpretations or are you looking to solidity what you already believe?

    Probably because he knew that
Diversity is something I would be interested in, I find it good to weigh other's interpretations so as to understand and articulate (via scripture) why I do or do not agree with them.
Multi or single volume are both fine with me.

In general modern, up-to-date commentaries will give more bang for the buck.
Authors of these commentaries have the advantage of being able to use the time-tested interpretations of those that have gone before them and add relevant commentary on modern topics.

Old commentaries may be helpful for devotional study but are useless in areas dealing with modern society.

Volumes can be costly. My suggestion is to pick a single volume from one of the commentary series mentioned by “Servant of the Lord” above and if you like it, begin slowly collecting others as you study various books of the Bible.
Every year purchase a volume or two.
I frequently find cheaper volumes on eBay or various used book sites.

...or find it free online. To name a few, for reference I like:

Alfred Edersheim - The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah

Jamieson, Fausset & Brown - Commentary

James Stuart Russell - The Parousia

    A.W. Pink - Commentaries

John Gill - Exposition of the Bible

...and the old standby - Bible Hub: Search, Read, Study the Bible in Many Languages

    ...and - KJV with Strong's Concordance (godrules.net)

I've always followed the advice of an older preacher:
Don't worry about buying a wall of commentaries. Buy them as you study a book.
I have a decent selection of commentaries on Romans because I was preparing a Sunday School series on the book.

Honestly, that is probably pretty good advice, being as I have probably spent a couple thousand by now on my library. My wife thanks you - she gets to eat this month. I would like to know what to look out for though if there is a good deal.
