If your wife likes to cook, tell her she can buy a cookbook every time you buy a new commentary.

MacArthur is pretty good. Plenty deep, but not too far out in the weeds.

I have the original expositor's, is the updated version worth the extra cash? I also got the D.A. Carson PNTC on the gospel of John for a steal due to minor highlighting from the prior owner - I'm very impressed by this one.

Best advice I could give would be to study the Word and ask God for wisdom to rightly divide the Word of truth. Most the time we’re just scratching the surface of God’s blessed book, but ever now and then we’ll find a hidden gem. I’ve found Gods Word can interpret itself with other scriptures if we’re willing to dig in it. When the Lord by the Holy Spirit shows us something in scripture, we can trust it. Men can fail us and it’s obvious by looking at various commentators on one passage. Many don’t agree. Many are deceived by following man’s interpretation. But the Lord will reveal truth to our hearts if we seek and pray. Remember
    1 Corinthians 2:12-14 KJVS
[12] Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. [13] Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. [14] But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Absolutely we go to God's word in prayer asking for understanding and guidance. That is necessary indeed. But He has also ordained the office of teachers for a reason. I understand that not everyone agrees on every interpretation which is one reason I would like diversity so as to weigh the common interpretations. Thank you for your comment.

You are welcome. I realize God gives us teachers. We just have to use discernment when reading others writing. Pray that you find what you need to help you grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord. We also desire the prayers of Gods people to grow in Him.

I would recommend the following commentary on the book of Ecclesiastes:

Ecclesiastes: The Philippians of the Old Testament by William D. Barrick.

The author is professor emeritus on Old Testament at The Master's Seminary and is a Bible translator.
