Need help understanding Lev 19:31

“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God” (Leviticus 19:31)

Ok.

Is this saying that if you are around someone messing with something that whatever they got going on can be contagious?

I'm asking because I had weird spiritual problems and now I'm wondering if it was from talking to other people with weird spiritual problems and listening to it instead of guarding myself Psalm 1 style, which I admittedly should have been doing, but since it was being affiliated with "Christian", I just didn't as much.

This verse is better translated

Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God

Christians are forbidden to get involved in any way, with the occult, and have any dealings with "mediums or spiritists", and all forms of "witchcraft". Everything that is from the devil, like all of this, and much more, must be rejected, and never used by any true believer in Jesus Christ.

The short answer is, yes. Taking part in occult-like things can invite trouble, even if you don't think that anyone is really trying to summon a demon and you're just having Halloween fun. But defile? Not sure if that's the right term in the case of a child of God. You do not belong to the Devil. You belong to Christ, and He will guard His ownership jealously.

So look to Jesus. Resist the Devil, and he will flee. Not merely go away, but flee as if pursued by an avenger.

Stay away from word of faith people and those who claim to have new knowledge "from God" that most others do not have.

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

And since you are individually the church, because you belong to the body of believers, confusion is brought about by men, not scripture!

Its warning us against having ANY dealings with the occult and supernatural other then dealing with the Trinity!

I think you and I know each other from a different forum (I'm FYD) - unrelated, just wanted to throw that out there, but yes I agree with you.

"Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind."

WoF is modern day blending of Gnostic and Witchcraft!
I'm not a word of faith healer by any means, but isn't that a huge part of what Jesus said was possible by faith, even teaching in Matthew 17:20 and elsewhere cursing the fig tree to set as an example for what is achieved by faith?

I wouldn't throw out anything Jesus said. Maybe nobody today is an apostle, but that doesn't mean God just stopped caring.

The acts of healing were to prove God's power, yes, but also His love and compassion and understanding of our own human suffering. I don't believe he turned his back on us.

Let me tell you how faith healed my wife... Seven years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she searched and searched on how to combat this horrid disease and decided to put it in the Lords hands as he knew the future and she didn't... The cancer was removed and she went thru radiation and chemotherapy... And after going thru this, she didn't blame the Lord for having to go thru it... It did just the opposite, it set her on fire, it put her on a mission to help other women who are going thru it... She started the Cancer, Care and Compassion Ministry at our church, to help anyone with any type of cancer... Her and her ladies group give handmade comfort items, free to those in need, no matter what age and weather they attend our church or not... Her group is going on right now... As I heard one preacher say back in the day... How do you spell J-O-Y?... Jesus first, yourself last and nothing in between or Jesus first, others second and yourself last... Brother Glen:)

My daughter worked for a number of years at UT Cancer center in Dallas (Cancer Care) before she moved to be near us. Her days were filled with care, tears, and expressing the love and joy of Christ to others.

She would rejoice to hear of your wife's recovery and continued ministry!

She asked me one time, what is your ministry?... I said that's easy... You come to me and ask what be good for boys and men the girls and women are your area... Then I help you pick up supplies... Then if things need to be mailed... I mail them... Then I chauffeur you around to deliver the items you make... My ministry is support!... Would any of you married brethren do anything less?... The BIG difference is that Jesus told us to have faith in God, WoF tells us to have faith in our faith!

I agree. Yet, God is not apt to provide extraordinary means where ordinary ways have been set. If one believes God is speaking through the Bible, and one has unfettered access to it in his own language, he must go to the Scriptures, with prayer, for his instruction.

I think prayer is the most neglected thing right now. But ask, knock, and seek. If we, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto our own children, how much more will the Father give good things to those who ask Him?
