being present when the Lord instituted the ordinance of the Lord's table... one or more of those on this board seem to believe the Lord included the traitor in that phrase: "This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you"(Luke 22:20 kjv). I have tried to come up with a couple of rationale why this could be true, according to certain soteriological viewpoints. Now, I certainly do not wish to misrepresent these views so if these are in error, feel free to set it right.
the Limited Atonement view : this, to my understanding, is the view of some Calvinists. They like to say that the blood of Christ is capable (right word ?) of atoning for the sins of the whole world and all of mankind but is efficacious only to those for whom it was shed. If we follow this view, it appears that though Christ collectively said "you", by intent and in His mind, he has actually excluded Judas as beneficiary of the atonement. It might make sense because His mind is the Book of Life (I posit that there is no physical book in Heaven containing all the names of His people throughout all ages).
You might also make the argument that when Jesus gave that example of when the Lord says to some "I never knew you, depart from me, ye workers of iniquity" (Luke 13:27), He was actually hinting at Judas Iscariot who is to betray Him in deed and by intent.
the Universal Atonement view : which is held by most others of "Christendom", so-called a.k.a. Arminians (Neo- or Classic), Pelagians, Semi-Pelagians and most everybody else in-between.
The view that Christ's blood was shed for all humanity, but was applied only to those who turn to Him in Godly and genuine repentance, for salvation, which conveniently explains why Judas is not in heaven. Neither can Hitler be, nor Stalin, nor any of the well-known historical bad boys and girls, past and present.
Well, that's it.
That's all my slowly dying though already actually dead since birth brain can muster up.
And for the record, I do not hold to any of these.
Mine is Particular Atonement, or as Calvin termed it in his time, "Limited Atonement" (which may not necessarily mean "Particular").
Particular Atonement. Or as Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo of NCIS likes to call himself, "Very Special Agent Tony DiNozzo".
Only for the elect.
