Since one of the moderators can't be courteous (I don't know which one) I am formally asking the entire board to not use my real name in the public forums. I changed my username a year ago for a very specific reason. That is really all you need to know, now be courteous and use people's usernames. That's what they are here for. The @ and username is the common courtesy on public forums.

I would say that request goes without saying!
Unless a person username is his real name -
    it should never be used.

    And that included partial names:
ie John of Japan - yes, John is is first name -
thus even if you know it - do not post the last name
    UNLESS you have permission.

This post is as an Admin!

I almost always sign my real first name at the end of my posts.

My reasoning is that it makes me think twice about what I post.

Im not hiding behind a “username” in order to make outrageous, slanderous or provocative posts.

There have been times where I responded to a post and the quickly edited my response upon signing it…. Sometimes a raw post slipped through.
By signing my name, I take full responsibility.

    Rob

Just because someone doesn't use their name doesn't mean that is what they are doing either. Though I don't think that is what you are suggesting, just making a clarificaton.

If everyone's username had to be their real name and their avatar their picture, the tone on here would turn down about 100 notches.

The reason some don't use real names is that it can be easy to locate someone with an internet search.

I know the reason. I was just stating a factual observation.

True story: When BB was started, it was the burden of 2 Hungarian Baptists from NYC. Both named Barnabas! Barnabas Halo became a lifetime friend and active here until his age forced a slow-down. Barnabas Kui was the brain and money to set up the BB in the beginning. They wanted a place for Baptists only to be able to discuss theology, support one another, develop a cyber community, and not full of rancor and hate. Good luck.

After a couple of weeks, Barnabas knew they were in over their heads in theological issues. I had just taken 4 years off from my mission work in Wyoming to serve on the faculty at Pillsbury Baptist College. I was also coming off a debilitating bout of equine virus and limited to be out of bed only a few hours a day (unable to go back to mission travel in the state), I enjoyed the computer "boards" springing up.

The BB asked if I would be interested in joining and "giving conservative answers" to the fray. Since I had advanced degrees and 30 years (then) of pastoral and college/university teaching/administration, I signed in as "Dr" Bob (I'm not even a nurse) to feign credibility to be answers. I watched a few days, then jumped in that June (2000). Have had some time periods "away" as other duties - real life - demanded more focus. But never changed my name. Neither did many of us from the beginning of creation.

I have no idea who anyone is beyond their username. I never was curious to find out more than each person's faith in Christ.

With many on the BB's early days, we wanted more than a general sterile Q/A relationship. So names, families, location, ministry, even pix or birthdays were shared.

I still do it with people I like, as Facebook changed the game.

BTW, assume "Austin C" is real and not just a city in Texas?

Hard to remember how the "internet" even worked prior to the mid-90's. Email was good (dial-up modems weren't) and websites limited. I had college students who tried to research a subject and ran out of "google" listings. Now we get a million in 1.3 seconds. Then we bought programs for education and limited to a floppy in a box.

Amazing what a few decades have done for I/T

I call mine "Bub" - short for Beelzebub.

It has other demons/false gods within. RAM. DOS. ROM. ACSII. HDMI. BIOS.

    Possessed.
