The Apostle John does not write in chronological order, but rather in repeating themes.

After the initial letters to the churches, John describes a scene in heaven of judgment. The key to understanding Revelation is understanding how judgments seats were conducted in 1st century Rome.

Judgements seats were popular spectator events and usually involved Roman officials. Occasionally, even the Emperor might visit an area and sit in Judgment (note Paul’s judgment before Agrippa)

Each case would be on the “docket” and would consist of reading charges or arguments from a scroll. Only certain people were considered worthy to break the seals to read the scrolls.

Only two types of scrolls had 7 seals; death penalty cases and wills. Each section would have a small “summary” of what would be found once the seal was broken.

So John announces the seal “summaries” and then goes back (repeating themes) to explain in more detail what was in each section.

Of course, the outcome is Christ rules and cast judgment (death) on Satan, demons and unbelievers. He inherits His Father’s Kingdom and we join in His inheritance forever.

Hope that helps.

peace to you

I can tell you that you'll get just about as many differing opinions as you get replies, and that most likely none of the views will consider the plain time statements, “the things which must shortly come to pass… the time is at hand … I come quickly … Seal not up the words of the prophecy of this book; for the time is at hand”,etc., within the book, seriously.

Do you have a personal preference for any of the popular views, i.e., Futurist, Preterist, Idealist, Historical? Do you know which view this book pertains to?

Here's one:

The Last Days: Keys to the Book of Revelation: Lister, Roy D., Wallace, Rev. Larry, Hubbs, Robbyn L.: 9781463786229: Amazon.com: Books

It's actually by three authors, and Amazon has no reviews or Q & A about it. Just this:

"The “Last Days” are detailed for us in the last Book of the Bible, the Book of the Revelation, so we’ll use this Book as our guide through the “Last Days” of the world as we know it now. This book is not meant to be a verse by verse exposition of the Book of Revelation. It’s only a brief look at it with the goal of helping us to get a better understanding of what the Book is about. This requires an explanation of the meanings of many of the persons, events and symbols used throughout, which we’ll attempt to share."
