Two interested verse I discovered in Mark that talking about salt, but it seems they are different in their meaning.
Mark 9.49-50
49. Everyone will be salted with fire.
50. Salt is good, but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves and be at peace with one another." (Matthew 5.13) (Mark 9.50) (Luke 14.34-35) (Colossian 4.6)
I think that in verse 49, "Everyone will be salted with fire," Jesus meant all sorts of persecutions of true Christians.
Jesus has experienced Himself all sorts of insult, humiliation, persecution and abuse, and so He warned His disciples that they also will have the same experience in all these things as He has.
For this reason, Jesus again repeated meaning of "will be salted with fire" but on a different occasion.
Mark 10.38-39
38.But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking for. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"
39.And they said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you shall drink, and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized."
But the next 50th verse have completely different meaning while still figuratively speaking about salt.
The verse starts, "Salt is good." Indeed, it is good, and not only for its original purpose, but in this verse, it is also good for our spirituality.
If we lose our spirituality, it is almost impossible to returned it back, just like salt if it loses its saltiness.
The words, "Have salt in yourselves" It certainly meant godly spirituality according to teachings and commandments of the Lord.
But what actually it means to have salt in yourselves in practice?
It means to keep, to behave, to enforce, and to live according to Statutes of GOD, uphold the Principals and Ideals of Christ, to spread Gospel, to teach others, and to stand own ground concerning Teaching of Christ and not give up before the face of adversity, persecution, and tribulation.
The end of the verse 50 ends with words, "be at peace with one another." These words do not need any explanation or translation, but under this context they mean that Christians who have "saltiness" must have unity, strong bond, and harmony among themselves in order to succeed in doing Christ' works.
