On another thread @Wingman68 took exception to my referring to the Falun Gong religion as a "cult". To be clear, I do not believe Falun Gong to be compatible with Christianity. I do believe it is a cult.

What is Falun Gong?

In short, Falun Gong is a spiritual practice in the Buddhist tradition introduced in China by Li Hongzhi in 1992.

Some of its beliefs are:

Achieving harmony between heaven, nature and men can bring stability and prosperity to society.

Different ethnicities each have a correspondence to their own heavens.

Falun Gong is a rediscovery of the “old, good things of ancient China."

Men achieve a higher state of being through moral rectitude, letting go of earthly desires, and the use of meditation practices to improve mind and body.

Those who leave Falun Gong will enter "the gate of no life".

Li Hongzhi (the founder of Falun Gong) has fashen (law bodies) that exist in the spiritual realm and observe everything that occurs in the physical world.

Medicines push back karma and are useless in fighting diseases.

The virtues of Falun Gong’s teachings rekindled the values of China’s traditional past; the strength and honesty of Taoism, the compassion and goodness from Buddhism, and the wisdom to deal with people and social settings with righteousness and tolerance from Confucianism.

Some Falun Gong publications:

The Epoch Times (ultra-right newspaper designed to combat Chineese communism)

Zhuan Falun (the main teachings of the cult)

Falun Gong (an introduction to the religion)

The Great Way of Spiritual Perfection (designed to help awaken one's spiritual energy or Qi).

Excuse me. I hadn't been vigilant enough to read the rules and things and didn't see it. And just copied over the article title into my post. Sorry about that. Thank you, for helping me.

There ate reasons I consider the religion a cult.

I think it obvious that Falun Gong is not compatable with Christianity.

But the religion views its founder, Li Hongzhi, as omnipresent (his "law bodies" existing in the spiritual dimension) alongside his disciples at all times, observing their every action. Those who leave the religion are believed to be destined for the "gate of no life".

I do not believe Falun Gong to be compatible with Christianity. I do believe it is a cult.

I'm curious, is that your bare essential definition of a cult? Compatibility with Christianity?

Would you consider Freemasonry to be a cult?
