Preaching Theology

I was converted in '69 when 19 under the ministry of Tim La Haye at Scott Memorial Baptist Church in San Diego. Yes, Tim preached Theology, but only re the Second Coming..

Since then in my scores of years of believing, I've never heard a sermon in any church which I attended a message entirely devoted to informing listeners of the doctrines of the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the natures in Christ, original sin , different views on baptism or refuting cults. Yet the NT is filled with teaching about these.
So, in my opinion, many pastors are not teaching the doctrine they should. (Acts 20:30,31, Jude 3, Titus 1:9, Rev 2:2, 1 Thess 4:13, Col 1:10; Rom 16:17, 2 Tim 2:2,)

Do you agree or disagree?

I sat under John Piper for 10 years and he preached theology all the time.

'The people' love to hear the sensationalism of Dispensationalism. It's very entertaining compared to theology, so, some preachers (maybe most) are going to feed the flock the sensationalism they desire. 'The people' want to be entertained? So be it!

Come to think of it, I’ve rarely heard theology preached.
Theology can be rather analytical and “heady”, appreciated by those that are more academically inclined.
IMO, people today bend toward preaching aimed more toward application. (Not saying theology doesn’t include application, only that shorter sermons emphasize one over the other).

I do remember a series on the attributes of God, I got a lot out of that and enjoyed it so much!

That's why Joel Osteen is so popular. "Your best life now!!!"

Not familiar with Scott Memorial Baptist Church in San Diego, though I know San Diego, I was there for 57 years... Our Primitive Baptist Church was one mile from Greenwood Memorial Mortuary... San Diego was my stopping ground and all I can remember that our church taught was Christ and him crucified and I have never been in an Old Line Primitive Baptist Church where they never taught doctrines of the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the natures in Christ, original sin , different views on baptism or refuting cults... The problem is you been in the wrong church... Our preachers, preached the whole counsel of God... In all my time in church I was fed sheep food not by the preacher that prepared it, but by God, who prepared the food and the messenger who delivered it... There is Deity and Duty preaching... What the LORD has done for us and how we should walk the walk of faith, to praise him for the blessing... Brother Glen:)

I sat under John Piper for 10 years and he preached theology all the time.

What did he preach about enhypostasia, eternal generation, dyothelitism, communication of attributes, and the eternal procession; of the Spirit? These are all vigorously taught among theologians and should be taught to believers.

Thanks for responding. I like Piper too!

You would have to listen to his entire Romans or Hebrews series.

I think the reason that so many believers are doctrinally ignorant and don't even understand the cult of Mormonism is that their pastors themselves are theological ignorant.

Can yours , e.g., refute the Mormon teaching doctrine that Elohim evidences the plurality of Gods or that that the Bible has lost some books? Hasa your pastor ever refuted these from the pulpit? If not has he fullilled 1 Thess 4:1`3 and Rom 16:7?

Mine? Yes. We did a study on cults. Actually, we have in most churches I've attended. In the evenings they had theology classes (we had seminary professors it retired professors in our congregation).

I assume that you did. So what did he teach you about the things I mentioned?
I cannot recall at the drop of a hat every sermon or every Theological point taught. Are you attempting to say that he is not as astute or theologically deep as you because you have taught these things and maybe he did not mention every point that you mention?

They’ve got medicines to cure that, ya know.

Rob

Being a theologian is one thing, preaching to the congregation is another... You use those highfalutin jargon in our church, there will be a lot of members heading to the exit and I will lead the way... Brother Glen:)

OK-I give up. I did not ask you to recall every sermon. Just in general what he did not teach about Christ. We cannot understand Christ without aggreeing or disagreeing on who is (which nature). Enhypostasia refers to that.

I'm sure he taught on that. He took 10 years to do Romans. He did not skip anything.

But using that word is meaningless. No one needs to know what that word refers to. Not a comment against you. Just a comment in general against big words that no one uses.

However, he did explain words that are in the bible.
Propitiation
Righteousness
Justification
Satisfaction

and concepts that are clearly biblical.

Penal Substitution
Justification by Faith

Bro Glern, I used words which are found in Systematic Theology books and Theological dictionaries.. I guess I'm in the wrong place. No, this site discusses Baptist Theology, right? Have you thought of looking up those words?

No? Ok.

Communication of attributes is the doctrine that the deity in Christ provides His human nature with divine qualities. (eg, Piper)

Eternal generation is the oft taught view that the Father eternally births the Son's Personhood or deity (eg Giles)

Eternal spirastion is the question of whether the Holy Spirit is eternally spirated from the Father as (eg Berkhof)

Enhyopostasia is the view that the divine nature is the only Subject of the acts of Christ. (eg Buswell)
These all are important to understanding the NT.
