Featured Preaching Theology

If you are sitting under the teaching of an expositor you may not hear any type of topical sermon. This does not mean theology is not being taught. For instance, a sermon can be given on Romans 3 and verse 23 exposited to convey the truth that all have sinned. This is teaching harmtiology or the doctrine of sin. Conversely, expositing Romans 10:9-10 is a classic text on soteriology. I prefer this type of teaching rather than a topical series in which the preacher has to pull together a myriad of texts in order to support his position.

Well, said. I’m not against theology classes per se.

But I’ll have to side with the NT authors on this one and say we should preach theology to the extent they do in their texts. That ought to cover it.

 

BTW, I didn’t know harmitology is the doctrine of sin. But, much like ponerology, I sort of picked it up naturally.

Trinity doctrine: One God in three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Deity of Christ: Jesus was God with us, the incarnate Second Person (Logos, Word, Son) of the Trinity who did not regard equality with God as a thing to be grasped.

Natures of Christ: Jesus was 100% human born of a women, and 100% God, the Second Person of the Trinity. His nature was divine, he did not have a fallen nature. He was tempted or tested in every way humans are tempted or tested, but did not sin.

Original Sin: Adam chose to sin and one of the consequences of that sin is all humanity (save Jesus) were made sinners. Thus we are conceived in sin as sinners, even though we have not as yet done anything good or bad. Thus we are spiritually dead, children of wrath and destined for destruction from conception, plus our human spirit is corrupted (with the knowledge of good and evil) such that we are predisposed to sin. But even in this "fallen state" we have the ability to seek God and trust in Christ.

Baptism: This term can refer to immersion into water, which is commanded by Christ for believers to do as a public declaration of faith, or the term can refer to immersion into Christ's spiritual body when God puts those of His choosing into Christ, which results in the washing of regeneration, being made alive together with Christ, as our sin burden, what God holds against us, being removed and taken out of the way. When we see the word in scripture, we must carefully consider which of the two very different things is in view.​
