    John 17:19
“And for them [His disciples], I sanctify Myself, so that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

Here the Greek word translated "sanctify" refers to Christ consecrating His life, as our substitutionary sacrifice, so that we, those born anew, may be indwelt and guided into effective witnessing for truth, the gospel of Christ.

Jesus is not asking only for His disciples, but for those who will belief in Jesus through their testimony, verse 20.

Since the "them" does not refer to Christ, verse 19, why are you questioning the viewpoint?

    Verse 17 = disciples
    Verse 19 = Christ
Verse 20 = those who will believe because of His disciples testimony.

No need to muddy the water.

Which meaning of the Greek word translated "sanctify" in John 17:17 is the intended meaning?

Does "keep them away from evil" ring a bell? Thus, when they are transferred into Christ, regenerated, made alive, then indwelt with the Paraclete, Jesus is asking that they be inspired to witness effectively for the truth of the gospel. John 14:17

Who does the sanctifying? Them or God?

    Your claim -
    I sanctify Myself

Here we have an obfuscation, as "I sanctify Myself" refers to God incarnate sanctifying Himself, not Jesus praying that God would sanctify His disciples through His truth, as presented in post #5.
Does "keep them away from evil" ring a bell? Thus, when they are transferred into Christ, regenerated, made alive, then indwelt with the Paraclete, Jesus is asking that they be inspired [by God] to witness effectively for the truth of the gospel. John 14:17

37 you are focusing on @Van's title, which is actually a poor choice of words. Focus on what Van wrote in post # 5.

Joh 17:17 "Sanctify them in the truth = the disciples and a verse you just quoted
Joh 17:19 "For their sakes I sanctify Myself, = Jesus
Joh 17:20 "I do not ask on behalf of these alone, = not just the disciples
but for those also who believe in Me through their word; = those that will come to trust in Christ Jesus

You seem to have jumped to the conclusion that @Van, because of his poor choice of a title, is saying he sanctifies himself. Reading his post should have dispelled that wrong conclusion.

Very simple. I failed to pay close attention to what you were explaining.
I am flat out wrong in this matter. My failure is here for all to see.
