I have no version of Landmarkism, nor Baptist Briders (appears Alan believes that).

    Both are gross errors.

Luke 24:44, ". . . And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. . . ."

Revelation 19:10, ". . . the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. . . ."

There are two interpertations of that "one baptism."
    1) Water.
    2) Holy Spirit.

Matthew 28:19, ". . . Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: . . ."

Of course both views are not correct.

Ephesians 4-6, "There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

I understand the desire to “fill in the blanks” where scripture doesn’t specifically support our theology.

Bottom line, scripture says nothing about water baptism for the disciples of Jesus, with the exception of the two that had been John’s disciples.

It is clear from Acts 19, John’s baptism is not the same as Christian baptism.

That is consistent with his transitional role as the “Forerunner” of the Messiah. His baptism was of repentance of sin. That is different from the practice of Temple sacrifices AND different from Christian baptism which is into the death of Jesus

1 Corinthians 12:13 is the baptism that saves.

    Water baptism is identification.

John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance of sins. Christ was no sinner, but when He was baptized of John, it signified His identification with us, who are sinners.

When we are baptized in water, even though we have no righteousness of our own, it identifies us with Christ in His righteousness.

    I do not think so.
1 Corinthians 12:12-13,". . . For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. . . ."
Water immersion Is not part of the gospel. 1 Corinthians 1:17, ". . . For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: . . ."

    Versus 13, ". . . we all . . ." includes the Apostle Paul.

    We disagree.
Acts of the Apostles 19:4-5, ". . . Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. . . ."

The verse you quoted explains they are different.

John’s baptism… of repentance (of sins)

Christian baptism…. In the name of Jesus

If they were the same why did the disciples immediately get baptized in the name of Jesus?

    peace to you

Explicitly John's baptism was to be "on Christ Jesus." Versus 4-5. "Into Christ Jesus."

“They should believe on Him that comes after”

    But for now… a baptism of repentance…

When He comes… Baptism into Him (Jesus)

I will try one more time….

If John’s baptism was the same as Christian Baptism, why were these disciples (already baptized into John’s baptism) baptized into the name of Jesus?

I’ll look for your direct answer.

    peace to you

Yes, per Acts of the Apostles 19:4, they were to be ". . . εις τον χριστον ιησουν." Which they did not understand. Paul corrected them.

Right, they did not understand they were to be baptized in the name of Jesus, since all they understood was John’s baptism of repentance which is clearly not Christian baptism.

Can you think of any passage of scripture where Paul, or anyone else said, “ wait, I know you have already had a Christian baptism but I don’t think you understood correctly, so we are doing it again”?

    No, it isn’t there.

There is no reason to baptize “again”, if John’s baptism is the same as Christian baptism.

    peace to you

    Landmarkism: What is it?
Heresey: any opinions or doctrines at variance with the official or orthodox position

    Landmarkism: Why is it?

1Co 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

    Landmarkism: Where is it?
Ga 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

    Landmarkism: When is it?
    2 Tim 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

    What is Lamdmarkism?

    Landmarkism’s stance on the church:

    1. Baptist churches are the only true churches in the world.
    2. The true church is a local, visible institution.
    3. The churches and the kingdom of God are coterminous.
    4. There must be no “pulpit affiliation” with non-Baptists.
    5. Only a church can do churchly acts.
    6. Baptist churches have always existed in every age by an unbroken historical succession.

Is there even anyone on this forum that is actually an advocate for Landmarkism?

And many things label themselves Baptist that are heretical. Just as there are many things that label themselves Christian that are heretical.

I am hoping that the Primitive Baptists on this site will answer as from what is presented, it seems that Primitive Baptists hold to Landmarkism.

It also seems that Landmarkism and Baptist Succession of the Faith are kissing cousins.

Yes, we do. Thanks for the civil conversation. I always appreciate your comments and the manner in which they are stated. I wish more folks on BB would follow your example when they disagree.

    peace to you
