Jesus and all that he accomplished is oozing through the Old Testament.
. . . One Baptism . . .
. . . One Baptism saves—by the Holy Spirit, into the Lord Jesus Christ. . . ."
I understand the desire to “fill in the blanks” where scripture doesn’t specifically support our theology. The implications from Jesus acquiring His disciples is they were baptized by John the Baptist.
There are two interpertations of that "one baptism."
1) Water.
2) Holy Spirit.
Matthew 28:19, ". . . Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: . . ."
Of course both views are not correct.
Ephesians 4-6, "There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."
I do not think so.
We disagree. It is clear from Acts 19, John’s baptism is not the same as Christian baptism.
The verse you quoted explains they are different. We disagree.
Acts of the Apostles 19:4-5, ". . . Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. . . ."
Explicitly John's baptism was to be "on Christ Jesus." Versus 4-5. "Into Christ Jesus."The verse you quoted explains they are different.
John’s baptism… of repentance (of sins)
Christian baptism…. In the name of Jesus
If they were the same why did the disciples immediately get baptized in the name of Jesus?
peace to you
“They should believe on Him that comes after”Explicitly John's baptism was to be "on Christ Jesus." Versus 4-5.
Yes, per Acts of the Apostles 19:4, they were to be ". . . εις τον χριστον ιησουν." Which they did not understand. Paul corrected them.If John’s baptism was the same as Christian Baptism, why were these disciples (already baptized into John’s baptism) baptized into the name of Jesus?
Right, they did not understand they were to be baptized in the name of Jesus, since all they understood was John’s baptism of repentance which is clearly not Christian baptism.Yes, per Acts of the Apostles 19:4, they were to be ". . . εις τον χριστον ιησουν." Which they did not understand. Paul corrected them.
We disagree.they understood was John’s baptism of repentance which is clearly not Christian baptism.
What is Lamdmarkism?Landmarkism: What is it?
Heresey: any opinions or doctrines at variance with the official or orthodox position
Landmarkism: Why is it?
1Co 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
Landmarkism: Where is it?
Ga 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told [you] in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Landmarkism: When is it?
2 Tim 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
What is Lamdmarkism?
Landmarkism’s stance on the church:
- Baptist churches are the only true churches in the world.
- The true church is a local, visible institution.
- The churches and the kingdom of God are coterminous.
- There must be no “pulpit affiliation” with non-Baptists.
- Only a church can do churchly acts.
- Baptist churches have always existed in every age by an unbroken historical succession.
I am hoping that the Primitive Baptists on this site will answer as from what is presented, it seems that Primitive Baptists hold to Landmarkism. Is there even anyone on this forum that is actually an advocate for Landmarkism?
And many things label themselves Baptist that are heretical. Just as there are many things that label themselves Christian that are heretical.
Yes, we do. Thanks for the civil conversation. I always appreciate your comments and the manner in which they are stated. I wish more folks on BB would follow your example when they disagree. We disagree.
