I have used Wikipedia a lot over the years. But now we can't do a search without logging in. Just yesterday
I used it for a search and there was no problem. I'm not comfortable with logging into that thing.

I'm aware of the problems associated with Wikipedia. It has a decided slant toward misinformation, or disinformation. Former founders have complained about that. But I used it for fact-finding about cities, nations, musicology, animals, biographical information and so forth.

    Is there an alternative site?

I do not have to log in to Wikipedia in order to use it. Just did so on both my iPhone and my desktop computer.

I just went and cranked up my laptop and, again, no problem, didn't have to log in.

Well, this is puzzling. I have been using Wikipedia for two dozen years and yet I still can't do a search since earlier in the morn. I don't know what the problem is.

Interesting. I don't know what could be causing it. Maybe a setting on your laptop got changed somehow?

Well, there are more pressing concerns in the world. So be it.

I only have a laptop and just looked up a topic and did not need a sign-in.

And just like that (a snap of the fingers) it now works. I didn't do anything special. It happened a minute ago. Back to normal. I love a working search engine.

You have to sign in to edit articles or to discuss articles with other content creators and editors. More than likely, Wikipedia's programming thought you were trying to contribute to the topic for some reason. Not just read about the subject.
