I don't think anybody here believes there is a year zero in the Gregorian or Julian Calendars.

There is, of course, in astronomical year numbering (it's be 1 BC).

But 1 BC ends where 1 AD begins.

This doesn't, however, affect counting years using Julian dates. The reason is a year is a year. Granted, there are leap years.

    For example:

I joined the Army in September 18, 1991.

My 1st year of service was 18 September 1991 to 17 September 1992.

You have explained that this would actually be my second year of service because there is no year zero. I dismissed that reasoning as unreasonable.

    Another example:

Tiberius began his reign Sep 14 AD.

Sep 14 AD to Sep 15 AD is the 1st year of his reign.

14 AD is the first year in which he reigned.

Sep 28 AD to Sep 29 AD is the 15th year of his reign.

28 AD is the 15th year in which he reigned.

But obviously there is no year zero. If there were then we would have to add a year to events spanning between BC and AD (1 Jan 1 BC to 1 Jan 2 AD is 3 years....if there was a 0 year it'd be 4 years).

The reason is we are counting years. 0 years is not a year at all.

I think we learned this in 1st grade. At least if I recall correctly. I know we learned months then.

Tiberius' 15th year reigning is 28 AD to 29 AD.
The 15th year in which Tiberius reigned is 28 AD

If there was a year zero then Tiberius' 15th year reigning is 29 AD to 30 AD.
The 15th year in which Tiberius reigned is 29 AD. BUT there is no year zero.

A "year zero" would add a year to everything spanning BC and AD (Tiberius would have died at 78 years old instead of 77....having lived 77 years).

    Hope this helps.

This shows how you understand this.

The date September 18, 14AD was what year of Tiberius Caesar's reign?

It was in his 1st year of his reign.

It was also the 1st year he reigned.

When it comes to events these start at a specific time in history.

I joined the Army on 18 September 1991.
20 September 1991 Was in my 1st year of service.

I retired with 23 years of service, not 24 years.

    Dude....this is basic.

Luke didn't say "after" Tiberius' 15th year but "in" his 15th year.

If we are referring to the 15th year in which he reigned it is 28 AD.

If we are referring to the 15th year of his reign it is Sep 28 AD to Sep 29 AD.

You were in your first year as a born child from the day you were born until 1 day before you turned a year old. Then you started on your second year, which was completed on your second birthday.

It aint rocket science. It is basic.

If there is a "year zero" then the dates are 1 year later....but there isn't.

Now let's test your math (see how you understand).

    I joined the Army 18 Sep 1991.

On 20 Sep 1991 was I in my 1st or 2nd year of service?

Your question is nonsense (a day is not a year). 18 Sep 14 AD is IN the 1st year of his reign.

You could calculate it (.00274 year of his reign). But that's silly.

The 1st year of Tiberius' reign was Sep. 14 AD to Sep 15 AD.

The 1st year in which Tiberius reigned was 14 AD.

Luke says "in the 15th year of Tiberius' reign". This would be between Sep 28 AD and Sep 29 AD.

But if Luke meant the 15th year in which he reigned then it woukd be 28 AD.

    Math does not change.

In your first year. We start counting our years of service from zero when our service begins.

If that day September 18 was the very day his reign began. What year of his reign would it be? Year zero.

No. It'd be day 1 in the 1st year of his reign.

You are mixing up units (you can't do that without receiving a "F" as a grade).

If you want to know what the day would be in terms of years then simultaneously divide the year by the days.

You'd get .002739 years. When you have a years full of days you get 1 year.

No. There is no "day zero". Day zero would be prior to an event. That is like having a round square in this case.

    Close enough....but no zero year.

IN my first year. We actually count service by days, but from day 1 until a year from my enlistment is IN the 1st year.

Even my 1st day would be a positive number (a percentage of a year).

That's how we do math. You get a silver star (you almost got the answer).

With Tiberius we are talking about "IN" a specific year of his reign.

    Don't peek (answer is below):

Tiberius Began his reign Sep 14 AD.

What dates would fall IN the 15th year of his reign?

What is the 1st year in which he reigned?

Apply math to Tiberius' reign and IN his 15th year reigning is Sep 28 AD to Sep 29 AD, and the first year in which he reigned is 14 AD (September 14 AD).

How and when a reign is reckoned to have began. My Nelson's Historical Bible Dictionary gave two dates for the fifteenth year. 28 AD or 29 AD, as ascension and nonascension dating.

Another, but an internet article, Jesus born on December 25, being circumcised on the 8th day gives us 1 AD January 1st.

    .
I see in the 15th year is before not after that year, 28 AD. And so after 14th year, 27 AD for Luke 3:1.
To allow the three Passovers in John's account.
    28 AD.
    29 AD.
    And 30 AD.

"In" that year, if meaning the 15th year IN WHICH he reigned would mean in 28 AD.

BUT in the 15th year of his reign would mean Sep 28 AD to Sep 29 AD.

27 AD is too early by any calculation.

The reason is December 31 27 AD is in the 14th year of his reign.

His 15th year was 28 to 29 AD. "In" does not mean "before".

It is simple math, brother. His reign did not start before his reign began.

I typed out years for your reference, to help you keep up with years.

If the date was 27 AD then Luke would have said "in his 14th year".

    14 AD as year 1
    So, [ 14 + 14 ]
    28 AD as year 15.

If 14 AD as year 0
    Then, [ 14 + 15 ]
    29 AD as year 15.

There is no "year zero". If there were it would be 13 AD because that is the year before he reigned.

Tiberius assumed his reign on 17 September 14 AD.

So 14 AD is the 1st year in which Tiberius ruled.

Sep 14 AD to Sep 15 AD is the 1st year of his reign.

Dude.....this is not hard. It is basic math.

Only if Sep 14 AD starts as year 0.
    [ 14 + 15 = 29 ]

Sense you don't believe there is any knowable calendar date. You cannot see an impossiblity if there was one.
