Motives for Trying to Comprehend the Bible

Over the years, though I have not read the King James Bible in that time consistently, except at certain periods of time, I have gotten progressively better at understanding it. But I still struggle to fully comprehend much of it.

I have desired to understand it fully for two reasons, one, that I want to become more godly and to draw closer to the Lord, and two, that I want to expand my intellect for thinking and writing. I wonder if this second motive of mine is a sin, although no other professing Christian has ever told me that it is wrong, but those who are not in that group, for one reason or another.

Here's why we should read the Bible - from the Bible, itself:

[1] Jesus said in his prayer to the Father in John 17:17 - "Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth." Read the Bible, King James or otherwise, to become holy - sanctified. Read it for that purpose's sake and you will find an encounter with the God of the universe.

[2] The Apostle Paul said to young Timothy = 2 Timothy 3:16-17 - "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."

[3] King David said this: Psalm 119:105 - Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

There are MANY more reasons to read the Bible - none of which is becoming a better writer.

If you are reading the King James Bible [which I cannot recommend, but do not and will not reject] - if you are reading it to become a better writer - you will NOT become a better writer and you will NOT become sanctified by the LORD.

You are treating God's Word as a writer's manual. Please stop,.

If you want to improve your writing - then write - every single day. Even if just 15-20 minutes.

Okay. I will try to read the Bible for the right purposes only, and try to learn to write better from practice and resources on writing. However, I still want to write in cadenced, sophisticated writing styles, in some of the writings I may want to write.

There is a nuanced, beautiful cadence/rhythm in the KJV. Anyone who immerses themselves in the reading of the AV cannot but help themselves in their personal writing style. The same may be said of reading Shakespeare or Milton. The benefit of reading the Anglican translation is that it is translated from the Word of God, not just a lovely sonnet, play, or poem.
