Must Believers Keep the Sabbath?
The answer to this question is emphatically “YES”! All true believers, sinners saved by the grace of God must keep the sabbath. But understand this – The true believer’s sabbath is not a day. OUR SABBATH IS A PERSON AND THE WORK HE ACCOMPLISHED ON OUR BEHALF AS OUR SURETY, SUBSTITUTE, AND REDEEMER. JESUS CHRIST AND HIM CRUCIFIED IS OUR ONLY SABBATH! All the sabbath days and times of the Old Covenant law were types, pictures, and prophecies of our spiritual and eternal rest in Christ and His finished work (Hebrews 4:1-3). We enter into HIS rest (the work He alone did and accomplished for us) when God brings us to faith in Him. Hereby we cease trying to be saved by our works and rest in HIS work for us, His righteousness alone which God has imputed to us (Hebrews 4:9-10). Christ is our continual and eternal Sabbath. We must fight the fleshly, self-righteous urge to work our way into God’s favor and earn His blessings and rest in Christ Who gained all grace here and all glory hereafter for us (Hebrews 4:11; cf. Matthew 11:28-30).
