Priesthood of all believers

A suggestion was made that we should discuss the “Baptist distinctive” of Priesthood of Believers. A quick Google search revealed that it is a broader PROTESTANT concept and not just a Baptist thing. Here is a discussion from GotQuestions to get the ball rolling:

The Bible teaches that all believers in Christ are priests in their own right. The main passage that deals with the priesthood of all believers is 1 Peter 2:5–9: “You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. . . . But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (ESV).

Old Testament priests were chosen by God, not self-appointed, and they were chosen for a purpose: to serve God with their lives by offering up sacrifices. The priesthood served as a picture or “type” of the coming ministry of Jesus Christ—a picture that was no longer needed once His sacrifice on the cross was completed. When God tore in two the temple veil that covered the doorway to the Holy of Holies at the time of Christ’s death (Matthew 27:51), He indicated that the Old Testament priesthood was no longer necessary. Now people could come directly to God through the great High Priest, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:14–16). There are now no earthly mediators between God and man as existed in the Old Testament priesthood (1 Timothy 2:5).

Christ our High Priest has made one sacrifice for sin for all time (Hebrews 10:12), and there is no more sacrifice for sin that can be made (Hebrews 10:26). But as priests once offered other kinds of sacrifices in the temple, so it is clear from 1 Peter 2:5, 9 that God has chosen Christians “to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” (verse 5, NKJV).

First Peter 2:5–9 leads us to understand at least two things about the priesthood of believers. The first is that believers are privileged. To be chosen by God to be a priest was a privilege. All believers have been chosen by God: a “chosen people . . . God’s special possession” (verse 9). In the Old Testament tabernacle and temple, there were places where only the priests could go. Into the Holy of Holies, behind a thick veil, only the high priest could go, and that only once a year on the Day of Atonement when he made a sin offering on behalf of all the people. What a privilege we have now: direct access to the very throne of God! We who were once “not a people” and “had not received mercy” (1 Peter 2:10) are the people of God who serve as holy priests because of the mercy of God.

The second thing to know about the priesthood of believers is that we are chosen for a purpose: to offer up spiritual sacrifices (cf. Hebrews 13:15–16) and to “declare the praises of him who called [us] out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:10). Thus, both by life (1 Peter 2:5; Titus 2:11–14; Ephesians 2:10) and by word (1 Peter 2:9; 3:15), our purpose is to serve God. As the believer’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20), so God has called us to serve Him. We offer our lives as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1–2). One day we will be serving God in eternity (Revelation 22:3–4), but not in any temple, for “the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple” (Revelation 21:22). As the Old Testament priesthood was to be free of defilement, so has Christ made us holy positionally before the Father. He calls on us to live holy lives that we might also be a “holy priesthood” (1 Peter 2:5).

In summary, believers are called “a royal priesthood” as a reflection of their privileged status as heirs to the kingdom of the Almighty God and of the Lamb. In Christ, our High Priest, we have a closeness to God, and no earthly mediator is necessary. As priests in God’s kingdom, we recognize that salvation is not merely “fire insurance” but an opportunity to serve God in offering spiritual sacrifices. The royal priesthood is comprised of people “eager to do what is good” (Titus 2:14). As priests of the living God, we give praise to the One who sacrificed Himself on our behalf, and we share the wonderful news of this grace with others

Hi atpollard, for the sake of clarity please repost #1 and underline where we are told the church are all priests. I remind you that Peter wrote to the "strangers" scattered through Asia Minor. He was not writing church doctrine that applied to every one in the church. The apostle Paul was commissioned and trained by Jesus Christ concerning church doctrine. Peter's ministry was to the circumcision.

Again, just because some in the church are promised specific ministry in the kingdom it does not mean every one is promised the exact same ministry. I call your attention to what Jesus said to his disciples who followed him for 3 1/2 years.

Mt 19:27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

I trust that your take away from this promise by Jesus concerning these men and their service to him does not apply to you and that you will sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel just because Jesus said it. At some point there must be context.

Thanks, atpollard, I did not see even one point to nit-pick. :)

Yes we were called out of darkness, because we then existed in the realm of darkness.

I see a request was made for scriptural evidence the church, those called out, are "all" priests. It is stated in 1 Peter 2:5 that the "you" are priests, and if you go back to 1 Peter 2:1-2, you find that the "you" are those saved.

OK, so ONLY the people alive THEN and who actually READ/HEARD the letter from Peter (his audience) were a "holy priesthood" whom Jesus called "out of darkness into His marvelous light" ... is THAT really your position? OK. No argument from me. If THAT is your hermeneutic of choice, who am I to argue. Peter was probably NOT writing to you. ;)

When He calls you into the "light", then ... let me be the first to say: "Welcome to the PRIESTHOOD of believers!"

I am just curious so please do not be upset, but since when is the church of Jesus Christ a nation? And why are these people addressed separate and apart from gentiles.

1 Peter 2:12
Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

1 Peter 4:3
For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

How do we process this information in a context that does not violate the integrity of the word of God? I think we should first consider that these people are not being addressed as the church of Jesus Christ although they are definitely a part of the church as I see it, but with an eye to the coming visible kingdom of God of which they are also a vital part.

They are addressed as "strangers." It would be helpful to ask the text why they are called strangers. The revelation of truth is progressive and we should not be ignorant of God's ways at this late hour and we should never deny that God has one kingdom with varying parts.

I have already shown where the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ will sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel in the coming earthly kingdom of Jesus Christ. Start in Gen 1:1 of the KJV and believe every word and you will be safe.

Ok, no upset, just calm conversation and honest opinions (all I have are opinions, only God has perfect TRUTH).

Since Jesus inaugurated the KINGDOM of God (a kingdom is a nation) and created it by cutting off branches from Jacob that were not the "Israel" and grafting on "wild branches" (gentiles) that were "Israel" (children of the Promise to Abraham, born of faith, like Abraham). Jesus made clear in words and deeds that salvation and faith was not a "Jewish" thing ... that Jesus was the Christ of all mankind and was making one new people (paul understood that message loud and clear).

So the Jews are blessed because they received the WORDS of God first, but true Israel is only the "doers on the word" ... the rest are just children of Abraham (like Ishmael) and not children of the promise.

Respectfully, I don't do scripture verses out of context unless they are making an extremely narrow point that can be seen in just a few words. So I deal with these verses by examining the broader context. What does the paragraph and chapter tell us about what they mean?

John the Baptist spoke of the KINGDOM as coming (that they should prepare) and Jesus spoke of the KINGDOM as already here. By the writing of Apostolic Letters, Israel (true Jews and Gentiles both in the TRUE VINE) were already living in THE KINGDOM. They were just sojurning through a foreign land until the King calls them (US) home.

WE are called STRANGERS because THIS WORLD is not our home. We travel in it, but we do not belong TO it. We have a home and we have a LORD that has gone ahead to prepare a place for US (not merely for the Apostles) and Jesus will return for US (not merely for the Apostles) and God will bring US (including the apostles) home to be with Him in our HOME. However, the LORD is already our KING, so we are already part of His Kingdom. We have been purchased with a price ... we have been redeemed. We are no longer "of this world", even as we sojurn as "strangers" in this world.

Which 12 Apostles? Can you name them? Judas, Matthias or Paul?
Revelation is such an abused book. :(
