"A U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) helicopter crew shot up the engines of a suspected drug boat off Colombia last week, sending the smugglers diving into the Caribbean."

Did they dive into International waters or American territorial waters? Does/should it matter?

"... with airstrikes on suspected trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific killing at least 193 people since September."

Why no due process? What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"?

Why doesn't the killing of these people constitute murder?

I am not a liberal demoncrate or pacifist. I am a veteran/conservative citizen concerned that our country is disregarding our principles and descending to a lawless nation.

At the very least, wait until these thugs enter our territorial water before any intervention takes place.

I wonder how "due process" works if you ate not in the US.

Even then...Puerto Rico does not have the same constitutional rights as the States.

So you condon the practice? Is any suspicious boat in international waters free-game to be destroyed by our military? If not, why not? Who determines that the boat is suspicious?

In this case, due process begins by disabling the craft and taking the occupants captive for "due processing".

I think the vessel would be less suspect if the smugglers were not on board.

There have been warnings given. I think that is good for a start.

But yes, I expect that the government employees are doing their job and not just picking off random vessels in the ocean.

I think that is a reasonable assumption.

I do not comdemn or condone the practice. I am not in a position to know the details. If I were in a position to determine suspicious boats it would be different.

What do you think about Puerto Rico (US criticizes) not having rights under the US Constitution?

For that matter, has Iran had due process? Do we just let any nation over run us because we are nice people? Do we have a responsibility to other countries because of the power and position we hold?

I would say yes, it is permissible to take out boats carrying drugs in international waters. The reason is it would be permissible with many other threats.

If a terrorist is headed to the US we do not have to wait until he arrives to intervene.

Regardless of where the drugs are headed the money, at least, creates a threat (funds organizations that are a threat to the US).

The thing is what makes these boats suspicious? We do not know because we are not in the position to know. It is very rare that a boat is targeted (given the number of boats). So there has to be a criteria. It just is not in our lane.

It certainly looks similar to me. Unless you think the straight of Hormuz is US water.

It strikes me as the same kind of international relations. Different scenarios. Different stakes. Different consequences. But the same scenario.

Death by nuclear or death by drugs.
Do we have to wait till they strike to do something about it?
