Question for anyone/everyone: Where in OT scripture is the resurrection foretold? (idk)
1st Corinthians Chapter 15
4 | and that he was buried; and that he hath been raised on the third day according to the scriptures; |
I know that you are interested in specifically the third day and I will try not to repeat any that have been already given, but here are some other OT references to resurrection.
Isaiah 26:19
Thy dead men shall live,
together with my dead body shall they arise.
Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust:
for thy dew is as the dew of herbs,
and the earth shall cast out the dead.
Gill mentions that Isaac was given up for dead when Abraham went out to sacrifice him and was returned to Abraham on the third day.
Genesis 22:4
Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
He also notes
Genesis 42:17-18
And he put them all together into ward three days. And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:
Joshua 2:16
And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.
There are a couple others that he mentions that would require some more study to see as clearly as Gill makes it out to be.
Acts 13:32-37
And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
From Paul’s teaching on the resurrection here we find Psalm 2, Isaiah 55 and the reference (sorry for the repeat) psalm 16.
Not exactly saying the third day in each case like Hosea, but the references are there considering also at what point in time
corruption is said to take place in a dead body. Worth noting also that Jesus was not left out in heat and elements that would accelerate the decomposition process. He was removed shortly after death, cared for, wrapped, and placed into a tomb, a place carved out of stone that would have been a lower temperature where the decomposition would not have occurred before three days. These were common burial practices and at a later date(decomposition completed) the bones remaining would be placed into a box and buried.
