Body & Soul

Are we a body with a Soul
or
Are we a Soul with a body?

This was brought up on Turning point (David Jeremiah) on his TV show today!
My personal belief is we are souls with a bodies..... Though God formed the body first and breathe the breath of life into man and he became a living soul..... when you look at Ecclesiastics scripture states to our body goes back to the dust of the Earth, our spirit goes back to God who gave it.
Ecclesiastes 12:7 before the dust returns to the ground from which it came and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7 - Remember Your Creator
...... Or when God referred to knowing Jeremiah before he was formed in the womb, indicating our souls / spirits existed before
Jeremiah 1:5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5 - The Call of Jeremiah

What Does the Bible Say About God Knew Us Before We Were Born? What Does the Bible Say About God Knew Us Before We Were Born?
...... Or when in Scripture it tells us in several different places our names can be erased / blotted out of the Lambs Book of Life indicating our names are already written and depending on our obedience to the will of God will be erased or remain, also indicating we existed before the creation of flesh bodies. Some think names are written in at conception. But when you go back to Jeremiah and a few of the scriptures he knew us before conception.

God created us as a living being having a body and a soul/spirit. We often discount our bodies calling it "carnal" and whatever but are we not treading dangerously into Gnostic thinking here? Upon our physical death, our soul will depart from our physical bodies and we will be present with the Lord in an "intermediate state" but we will be looking forward to the day when will be raised in his likeness. In the age to come, we will once again have a body and a soul and the two are inseparable with both reflecting upon who and what we are.

I think we are a Spirit that has a Soul that lives in a body. I'm not dogmatic about whether Spirit and Soul are distinct though. The flesh is definitely not who we are,not we would cease to be when it died.
But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? 1 Cor 15:35

Is, "body," necessary unto life?

Romans 8:24 YLT for in [unto] hope we were saved, and hope beheld is not hope; for what any one doth behold, why also doth he hope for it?
V 23 And not only so, but also we ourselves, having the first-fruit of the Spirit, we also ourselves in ourselves do groan, adoption expecting -- the
redemption of our body;

Is the hope we were saved unto, the redemption of the body?

1 Cor 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

Do we need a body to be with Christ?

Phil 3:20,21 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 1 Thes 4:16,17

Wherefore comfort one another with these words. 18

I'm not sure what point you are making. From the time we die until The Resurrection, we are separated from the dead body.

Our "Consciousness" and the essence of who we are seems to be in our soul and is that which exists after death. However, our bodies are a big deal otherwise why are we longing for the resurrection where we will be raised in glorified bodies? I agree with you about the distinction between soul and spirit. Some try to say that we are a "triune" being with a body. soul, and spirit but such is not the case as these parts are not distinct one from another as is the Godhead but that is a whole other can of worms!

Luke 23:46 YLT and having cried with a loud voice, Jesus said, 'Father, to Thy hands I commit my spirit;' and these things having said, he breathed forth the spirit.
Lit. Father, Into the hands of you, I shall be placing the spirit of me.

For three days and three nights where was the spirit of Jesus?

Luke 23:55 YLT and the women also who have come with him out of Galilee having followed after, beheld the tomb, and how his body was placed,
Lit. and how was placed the body of him.

For three days and three nights where was the body of Jesus?

Acts 2:31 YLT having foreseen, he did speak concerning the rising again [the resurrection] of the Christ, that his soul was not left to hades, nor did his flesh [ ? body ? ]see corruption.
Lit. not was left the soul of him into of Hades

For three days and three nights where was the soul of Jesus?

That is my thoughts relative to the body and the soul.
