Church said to leave this area- Pastor said we are staying -- Your thoughts?
(note: yes pastor is female - but let this discussion be about what was said - not who said it!)

Is this a matter of Free Speech?
Do that right exist at this location?

She spoke the truth...pipes can not hear prayers.

"The church, which has operated in Fremont County for nine years, sits within the borders of the
Wind River Indian Reservation, but it’s on a parcel of private, not tribal, land."

If it's on private land, there's nothing the tribe can do about it. They don't have to like
it. Blocking access...that's another matter.

Not sure how property within the boundaries of tribal land are not on tribal land.

The church may have purchased the land but it’s still within the reservation, but privately owned.

Not sure how the laws work for Tribal Lands, but I suspect they have wide authority to govern themselves.

So far, it seems they’ve asked them leave, but are not yet attempting to force them to leave, but I may have misunderstood the story.

Peace to you

I did mention that if the church has a right to remain where it is.

But lets also discuss what was said by the pastor - which has upset the tribal leaders.

It is true that "A pipe cannot hear your prayers" but are you trying to reach this people or are you just out to "flame and shame" them?

Are you going to reach Roman Catholics by telling them that "The Pope is the Anti-Christ and the Vicar of Hell!" or by dragging around a statue of the Virgin Mary behind your car (yes, I have heard of stuff like this being done)?

Are you going to reach Muslims by declaring that "Muhammad was a false prophet and a pedophile!"?

Something may be true but you ought to exercise discernment regarding how you say it or whether such needs to be said at all!

From what I saw in the article they focused on 2min. of the whole message. What was the context and what else was said re reaching the lost.

From the article it seems that some of the tribal people attend but others are upset that they are even there as they hold hard feeling due to their history with other churches.

From what I saw in the article she is this from love for the lost.

Or….

They have hard feelings due to professing Christians slaughtering their ancestors, stealing their lands and putting them on this reservation…

Concerning what the pastor said…

..Armchair articulated it very well.

Peace to you

Sure, as people did, and still do, all over the world.

What exactly does smoking the pipe represent? Why not use a little bit more tact in directing these folks to Jesus, and correct their misunderstandings by presenting God’s love for them?

Peace to you

What she said was true. She probably should correct her own rebellion before attacking the tribes. (Woman pastor)

She cannot change the peoples past but she could change their future. She was doing just what we are called to do, preach the gospel.

Most will find the gospel offensive but that is not a reason to stop preaching it.

Is it not better to have a woman preach to the lost then wait for some man that does not shown up. She has already been there several years so if God wanted a man there then He would have had one show up.

I do find it odd that some people would rather have no one preach than have a woman do so.

Not knowing the details - It appears that the preacher rather than leading others to Christ, created a roadblock - making the message of the gospel offensive to those the church was attempting to reach. She messed up big-time! Time for her to apologize, and repent; perhaps the church can survive and carry on.

There are times when relating the news of the gospel to a ritual from a pagan community can make a connection which draws them to the life-saving message.
Don Richardson, in his book, "Peace Child," made such a connection, eventually leading the pagan community in PNG to Christ - a must-read missionary story!

Never violate the clear commands or prohibitions of Scripture in an attempt to do the work of God.

You will never win favor of those you insult. There's a way to present the Gospel without insulting people. Actions often say more than words.

Since we do not have the full message but just what may have been taken out of context it would seem that we are not in a position to judge what she said.

The gospel is an insult to many people. Did Jesus or any of the apostles hand out a questionaire prior to preaching the gospel message?

From the link:
Lucas said she’s not against the sun dance altogether: she supports fasting and praying as a whole concept. But she understands the ceremony also involves “the worship of the pipe,” she said, adding that’s idolatry, and irreconcilable with the teaching that “Jesus is the only way.”
