Positive Review of End of the Spear

The sad thing, LadyEgale, is that we have made a movie about how a missionaries Son leaves the modern would and goes to live with the Native to help them cope with the encroachment of modern society. It is an interesting story no doubt. But it is more a multicultural story than a Gospel story. And all this time the story of the five missionaries as told in "Through Gates of Spender" is still waiting to be made into a film. The irony is that most folks are wanting to see this film because they think it is about the martyred missionaries. But it is about the Son steve saint and his cultural activities with the Indians. The story of the missionaries is the draw, but it is only back ground for "the point of the spear"

Bunyon, you hit the nail on the head. After reading Steve Saint's bio. and seeing the documentary about the film I just think S.Saint is exploiting the story of the missionaries to further his little multi-cultural, social gospel thinga mo bob.

End of the Spear screening reveals not a christian movie at all.

 

Well, spear me. I went and saw it, and I liked it. I know all the controversy, but anyone who sees it must admit that Chad Allen did do a good job acting the parts. Cross cultural missions is close to my heart, and i squawled like a baby at the end.
We must realize that this movie was probably not meant to lead people to Christ. It told the true story of missionaries, but as someone else said somewhere, that was a backdrop for other things. The Gospel was not presented as we present it in our our own culture, but I like the way they made it relevant to the culture of the Waodani.
I will jump out on a limb here and say that if we boycott a movie because someone acting in it is living in an openly sinful lifestyle, then we should not go to see ANY movie, and shut off the tv too. And the radio. Even the Christian stations. Its everywhere.

 

We should not go to church because there are sinners there too.

It is not about Christ, the gospel, or the cross.

Mel Gibson, ironically a Catholic, presented Christ better in his way, no matter how the detractors say it was about gore (not Al, mind you).

 

But the sinners in church are forgiven sinners, washed in the blood, justified in Christ, filled with a hope of heaven, mindful of their unworthiness.

And those not forgiven are seeking.

And such were some of you, but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of our Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God....1 Corinthians 6:11

There ought to be a "Goshen/Egypt" difference between the saved and the lost---the difference between daylight and dark!!

 

To start with, I have seen the movie

We are in the midst here of a fundamental difference in perspective, so I fear no middle ground is available. Let me make a couple points clearly.

1. Chad Allen may be an ungodly sinner, and not a grade 'A' actor, his choice as the lead is not a great one for a "christian" production company [yoda]Unexpected this is, and unfortunate[/yoda]

2. The movie is better in production/cinematographic quality that any so-called christian movie that has come out in recent years, with The Passion being a possible exception if you like that kind of horror genre style

3. Any of you attacking the movie for its lack of gospel content either a) haven't seen it and you comments are merely pooled ignorance or based on someone elses opinion or b) you don't understand where the gospel message starts with a people with underdeveloped language and cultural reference. You could walk up to an unreached people in indonesia and give them your best Jack Hyles fire and brimstone gospel sermon, and they won't understand the words that are coming out of your mouth. Where this movie starts the message is were it starts with primitive people groups, don't apply your American cultural perspective on a place and people that were completely alien to it.

Could more clear presentation been made in the narration or the back story, yes. If I had been in charge it certainly would have. The movie however is good. It represents the story well, it is good entertainment, it may even be used of God to give some an opportunity to explain the gospel further as it has to me already, in conjunction with telling my co-workers about my upcoming missions trip, where they ask me why I would "put myself in danger" not a correct question, but still appropriate. I put this movie in the same category as the Passion. I didn't expect it to create some huge influx of people to church, and it has lived up to my expectations. As movies go, it was decent, most of the attacks I have read on this board are baseless and ignorant to those who have actually seen it, and I would have no problem recommending it to you. But it won't get you off the hook and convert the World, that will have to be done the old fashioned way.
