Clean Books and Movies

Why do authors and scriptwriters find it necessary to use profanity, sex, and graphic violence in the stories they create? Do they think it's necessary to attract an audience.

What do y'all think?

Without a doubt, authors use language and storylines that attract a certain type of reader - it's part of the formula of writing a book.
I don't watch many films or TV

There are times when violence and "spice" fits the character of a story - we can even see it used in Scripture.
Usually the books that over-indulge in violence and graft reveal their twisted nature rather early in the text.
I read quite a wide variety of books but will stop reading and drop the book if the language or text become too graphic.

I remember reading crime novels by John McDonald as a teen. Each one had a different color in the title.
They were fun and easy reads but because I was so absorbed in them as I poured over them, they provoked some rather vivid dreams.

I like crime and suspense novels. It became difficult to find any that weren't as I described in my original post. I started writing my own.

I've been mulling over writing a novel - a fictionalized travel story crossing the county, just me and a dog - what might have happened in life if events took a different turn.
I've got a summary of what I want but have to interview a few people for some background material.

One of my favorites!

You picked that up quickly. The dog was named "Speed Racer" by my grandson.
The two of us would be traveling quickly across the country to meet with them...
I'd call it, "Travels with Speed"

I love having a dog. Walking through the nature trails of a nearby park was fun, especially when we saw deer at dusk.

Sadly, I cannot have a dog right now.
