Why do authors and scriptwriters find it necessary to use profanity, sex, and graphic violence in the stories they create? Do they think it's necessary to attract an audience.

Travels with Charley: In Search of America is a 1962 travelogue by John Steinbeck, chronicling his 1960 road trip across the United States with his standard poodle, Charley, in a custom camper truck named Rocinante. The book details his observations on the changing American character, national identity, and social issues like racial tensions, as he sought to rediscover the country he had written about for years, traveling from New York to the Pacific Northwest, down to California, and through the South before returning.I've been mulling over writing a novel - a fictionalized travel story crossing the county, just me and a dog - what might have happened in life if events took a different turn.
I've got a summary of what I want but have to interview a few people for some background material.
