Do You Have Only Half a Savior?

Many Christians think salvation is only being saved from sins.

They are happy to be saved from sins, so they do not go to hell when they die.

But Jesus died on the cross to save us from both sins and sicknesses. Sin and sickness come from the same source, the devil. Sin and sickness are due to the fall of Adam and Eve. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. Salvation is for both body and soul.

To believe that Jesus only saves your soul is to believe in only half a savior.

But Jesus is a full savior of both soul and body.

We must never pray for healing with the faith-destroying phrase “if it be Thy will”. God’s will is found in God’s Word. The fact that Jesus healed everybody who came to Him for deliverance from illness, blindness, and other infirmities, “all manner of sickness and disease”, is proof that God’s will is always healing for all.

Jesus never denied healing to anyone due to their being too sinful. The multitudes who flocked to Jesus for healing did not have to pass any tests assessing their spirituality. There were probably all kinds of unseemly sinners in those crowds, even demon-possessed folk.

Deaf, mute, blind, epileptic, self-mutilators, lepers, cripples — they all got healed. No disease was hopeless, fatal, or incurable when people came to Jesus. Even corpses got healed and raised from the dead.

In the gospels, Jesus healed people as much as, or more than, He taught people.

Jesus never said to anyone, “I cannot heal you. Your sickness was given to you by God to humble you and teach you endurance.”

Jesus is still in the business of healing all who come to Him. His healing power, and His merciful will to heal, has not diminished one iota.

Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Christianity must return to what it originally was and is still meant to be — a religion of healing. When a person is sick, injured, or disabled, the first place to go to should be a church, not a hospital.

James 5:14,15

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

The Physically Healing Savior was prophesied in Isaiah.

Isaiah 53

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Look at verse 4 in the Holman Christian Standard Bible:

Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.

Look at verse 4 in Young’s Literal Version:

Surely our sicknesses he hath borne, And our pains -- he hath carried them, And we -- we have esteemed him plagued, Smitten of God, and afflicted.

Psalm 103

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

Let us grab hold of the truth that Jesus is the God of healing, and trust Him to deliver us, not just from hell, but from mental afflictions and physical illness, too.

3 John 2

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

You left out the next verse where Paul explains what those infirmities were. They were not sicknesses. They were opposition to his ministry and problems he encountered that made depend on God.

2 Corinthians 12:9,10

Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Why did Paul have to leave Trophimus behind sick?

In the verse cited above, 2 Corinthians 12:9, note the word translated as "infirmities." Here in this verse, the word is said to mean hindrances to presenting the gospel. But earlier in the opening post, Jesus heals these infirmities such as deaf, blind, lame. Note that being unwell does hinder our ministry, like a Pastor who cannot continue at the podium due to ill health. And yes, sometimes our weaknesses perfect or complete our contribution to our ministry. When they helped our beloved Pastor from the stage, his message was complete!

One instance of sickness in a Christian does not negate all the many verses about divine healing and Jesus healing all who came to Him.

Paul does NT say why Trophimus was sick. Apparently Trophimus may not have had much instruction in the scriptures and thus did not have sufficient faith to be healed at that time. This is based on many scriptures that deal with specific healings.

Acts 14:9,10

This same one heard Paul speak who, steadfastly beholding him and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.

Mark 5:34

And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Mark 10:51,52

So Jesus answered and said to him, "What do you want Me to do for you?" The blind man said to Him, "Rabboni, that I may receive my sight."

Then Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.

Luke 17:17-19

So Jesus answered and said, "Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?

Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?"

And He said to him, "Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well."

A wonderful demonstration of messaging through infirmity is found in John 11:1-44.
This is the only time that Jesus did not heal someone immediately, but allowed the sickness to end a person’s life, then Jesus did heal him by raising him from the dead.

This one exception does not negate the immediate healing of vast multitudes of people in the gospels, nor does it negate the fact that Jesus bore our sicknesses and our sins on the cross as Isaiah 53 tells us.

It is odd to me that instead of being thrilled and thankful for the many scriptures that promise divine healing, people hunt for loopholes that might justify not trusting Jesus as Divine Healer.

Many pastors and theologians neglect to teach the wonderful blessings of divine healing, perhaps because they do not have sufficient faith to receive it themselves or to minister it to others, as James instructs.

James 5:14,15

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
