Euro PhD format is dissertation only (but quite intense research along w/ TAing and undergrad teaching and close relationships w/ your faculty mentor and the library). Thus it is possible to do some w/out relocating.

Which would it be? Which is the best respected school and program, in particular for a PhD in NT? It doesn't necessarily have to be evangelical either. What are some of the good ones that don't require you to relocate?

I hope they improve their rep. Not too many in the states know it well enough to judge. I thought for sure you had to go in w/ a dissertation proposal. So that is good to know. They're back where I had them (if that is any consolation).

I knew it was the European PhD format... but did they have to go in w/ a prospectus about their research??? Or is it like this guy who is asking advice from the board to come up with an idea??????

That sounds more like a DMin dissertation.

What I found most strange is that usually pursuing this kind of degree in this format, you begin with a good idea of what you want to write about ahead of time. For instance, I wouldn't start a European PhD unless I had a good idea of what I wanted to research and already done some preliminary...

Whatever you are... you are focused on you for many of your posts. Whether it is another trendy book you've read, your WOTM approach, or this... you tend to focus on you a lot.

How about patriotism in the church? Can you love Jesus w/out loving America??? Be interesting since you are working w/ South Africa.

Could you be more specific as to what you are wanting to write about. Contextual as in social contexts? What field are you wanting to apply this toward? Theology?

I think any book that is purely about eschatology is one to avoid. Think about it. In all of the systematic studies, eschatology is the only one that refers to the Biblical narrative. It is the only systematic area that looks at the end of redemption history. But if we thought of eschatology...
