Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

Idyllic! Japan is a physically beautiful country, the culture is fascinating (I trained in Judo and Karate before ever going there, and loved them) and the people are gracious and clever, but very stiff. Making actual friends there is very challenging. They tend to not be very open to...

"There is safety in believing the words of the KJV Bible." A powerful quote by our Board member, JD731.

Personally, I've read Shakespeare. Took two 3 credit college courses and got straight A's. Acted in a Shakespearean play. The language of Shakespeare is not more extensive than the language of "A Christmas Carol," which my church is acting in an hour from now. (I'm a "charity solicitor.")...

I agree. There is so much technology nowadays, and formal education goes to a much higher level, that is is impossible that children of the Dark and Middle Ages had a more extensive vocabulary.

I am friends with their American representative, a truly blessed Bible translator, currently working as a consultant on five different missionary translations. He was the lead translator on the Mongolian Bible. The TBS has for years given free TR New Testaments to our Greek students, and I...

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

Very good. We agree, then. The use of a violent metaphor in Scripture is not physical. Yes, I can tell how you were triggered. But please know that whatever Hovind did to his wife or any other sins he committed. as absolutely nothing to do with me. I've never even met him. My wife and I are...

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

Thanks for posting. The term "sword of the Spirit" is a metaphor. Are you objecting to Biblical metaphors simply because they sound violent to you? When we use the sword of the Spirit in spiritual warfare it does not mean to harm people. It is not me but the Holy Spirit who applies the Word of...

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

No, we don't. There is nothing the Word of God that commands us to defend it. It is God's Word. He can defend His own Word. Instead, what we have are metaphors that say we are to attack with the Bible. It is a sword (Heb. 4:12, Eph. 6:17). You don't defend a sword, putting it in a nice display...

"There is safety in believing the words of the KJV Bible." A powerful quote by our Board member, JD731.

I was a missionary to Japan for 33 years. Every furlough I found that the English translation issue had heated up more and more. Meanwhile, billions of people in the world had not a single phrase of any translation of the Bible, much less a KJV equivalent Bible of some kind. Japan had no NT in...

I don't feel like it is an argument, but just a good discussion. Bible translation is my area of academic expertise, so I hope to be a blessing and a help in this area. Shucks. I'd love to know more about his team's efforts. I figured he did. So his team uses a literal method (sometimes...

"There is safety in believing the words of the KJV Bible." A powerful quote by our Board member, JD731.

It is impossible to print the Bible in other languages. The KJV is an English Bible. You cannot have an English Bible in another language. It is impossible. Do you mean a translation of the KJV into other languages? If so, it ceases to be the KJV at that point, and becomes a translation of the...

I'm not sure how this answers my post. There is a British crown copyright, but you are right that most consider the KJV to be public domain. The crown copyright doesn't apply to the USA, as far as I know. I understand.

You missed the point, which is that there are billions of people in the world with no KJV or equivalent thereof. Sorry, this goes right over my head. I can't tell what you are trying to say. Not germane. These statements have nothing to do with my point, which is about Bible translation, the...

    Missions Giving and Bible Translating

I think the faith promise method is getting more and more common. I know several mission leaders who preach it. When our church started doing it, the missions budget grew considerably.

"There is safety in believing the words of the KJV Bible." A powerful quote by our Board member, JD731.

Let me give the example of the first complete Japanese translation, called the Motoyaku Bible (元訳聖書). It was ostensibly done from the KJV because the one missionary who was a Greek scholar, Nathan Brown, left the team when they would not translate baptisma (βάπτισμα) as "immerse" since he was a...

"There is safety in believing the words of the KJV Bible." A powerful quote by our Board member, JD731.

Actually, I don't believe that the KJV has been translated into hundreds of languages. That has been claimed but never proven by KJVO writers There are Bible translations in many languages where the KJV has been consulted in the translation work, but there are very few where the KJV was the...

"There is safety in believing the words of the KJV Bible." A powerful quote by our Board member, JD731.

Fact alert: the KJV is an English Bible, and there are billions of people in the world who do not speak English. Therefore, "in the whole World" is not factual. In fact, there are billions of people in the world who do not have access to any Bible translated from the texts of the KJV...

New Book on the Doctrine of Scripture

I mostly agree with you about this. However, you say that it the translation philosophy is "far more" important than the Greek text chosen. To me that is like saying the heart is far more important than the liver. But if you lose either one you are dead. Considerations in choosing the NT Greek...
