    Strange man threatens theological education

This is a terrible attempt by the federal government to control religion. I imagine that at the very first lawsuit, the Supreme Court would overturn it, but in the meantime it can do great harm. Having said that, our college and seminary avoids the whole problem by: 1. Not taking any...

    It is Finished

I agree. I am mystified that someone would think anything other than the blood atonement of Christ was being finished.

The Disappearance of the Dean Burgon Society

I have both of these and have perused them. He did a fair job. I respect him for actually becoming a translation consultant and visiting many fields to help. Judging by his Greek grammar, he knows Greek pretty well. When a KJVO person meets missionary Bible translation, they are forced to...

So, not the atonement being finished?

    It is Finished

Don't know what "sticking your chest out" is either. Thank you. Have a great vacation. So then you can't say that Bible translators don't know theology, can you. Then there is D. A. Carson, who does both quite well. I know many missionary translators, and all are competent in theology. That...

The Disappearance of the Dean Burgon Society

Yes, that would describe my position. Non-KJVO: my college and seminary (baptistcollege.org), Maranatha Baptist U. and Seminary, Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary, Central Baptist Theological Seminary (in Minnesota). I understand that Pensacola Christian College is TR only; don't know if...

    It is Finished

I saw no other reason for the long and involved posts you are giving me. I haven't said that much to respond to. I "puffed up"? What does that even mean? All you had to say was that you took graduate level Greek and I would respect that. I wasn't getting that from your posts. But again, I've...

    how to become a baptist?

Don't know. The name "Ed Morris" sounds familiar. There was one young man (him? don't know) who was with the opposition, but when he became a pastor himself he saw how wrong he had been and wrote a letter of apology to Dad--which didn't impress Dad much. Yeah, I remember playing and singing a...

    It is Finished

You apparently want me to join your many discussions about the atonement--or whatever. I have no interest in doing that at all. I've had my say here, so I'll move on.

    It is Finished

I don't believe it is the suffering, but the atonement. Everything must be according to context, but there is not enough context to be adamant of the meaning of "It." You don't know the Greek, do you? So don't speak authoritatively about it, please, as in "The only reason...."

    how to become a baptist?

I had a pastor friend who went on a trip, and his assistant baptized for the first time. He goofed, and said the words while holding the old guy under. When the pastor came back, he said, "Are you glad you're baptized?" The old guy said, "I'm just happy to be alive!" :Biggrin

    how to become a baptist?

To my knowledge, Southside BC ceased to exist, maybe as a judgment from God about how they treated my Dad. (One leader against my Dad died of cancer, another in a car accident, etc.) So probably New Hope BC just bought the building. We lived in the parsonage back on the property, which was 7...

    how to become a baptist?

I visited the church back in the day, and knew the pastor, but I don't remember anything about a Bible college there. As far as I remember, the church was SBC, but leaned IFB, so that would explain their felt need to have a Bible college.

    It is Finished

I have absolutely no desire to get into the Cal/Arm debates. That would be paraphrase, so no. Nobody does that. There is no contextual basis for it. Yes, "It is finished." That is required in Optimal Equivalence, which I follow. If by "clarify" you are talking about translation, I teach in...

The Disappearance of the Dean Burgon Society

I'm a Lifeline Bible Only advocate! ;) That is the Japanese NT translation from the TR that I was the lead translator for. (We were in Japan for 33 years.) This is the only modern Japanese NT from the TR, not from critical Greek texts. My team is now working on the Lifeline OT. My point is that...

Is the KJV's rendering the most accurate in these ten passages?

Lantz's 2nd example is "pineth away" in Mark 9:18. He appears to have never heard "pine away" in modern English, but it is definitely still in use, and anyone who knows English well will recognize it. There is even a webpage: Understanding “Pine Away” — Meaning, Usage, and Practical Tips -...

    It is Finished

I have to correct my own grammar. Τετέλεσται is actually a passive, so there would be no direct object. However, there is no stated nominative noun (subject), so Christ's statement is ambiguous. This does not affect my interpretation. A translator may render whatever subject in English he or she...

    how to become a baptist?

Dad pastored Southside Baptist Church (IFB) in Millington 1962-1965. The church is no longer there, but we had a lot of sailors come from the base and get saved. One was a young black man, and that being the South the leaders of the church strongly objected. But Dad was from Pennsylvania and...

    It is Finished

No, but that form of the word occurs only here in Scripture. As I said, some lexicons have simply the word "pay" as one meaning, so yes, it could bnr used simply for "pay." I already said I would not. But I would not see that as a mistaken translation since, as I said, there is no direct object...

    how to become a baptist?

One is a Baptist if one holds to the "Baptist distinctives." There are some different lists, but here is a quick list: 1. Salvation by grace through faith alone; no works added. So, there must be a regenerate church membership. 2. The Bible as the sole rule for faith and practice. 3. Only two...
