The Reduplication Theory - Romans 10:5-8
Rom. 10:1 ¶ Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above
7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Paul sets forth a contrast in Romans 10:1-10 in regard how to obtain the righteousness required by the law to be "saved" (Rom. 10:1) from the condemnation by the Law.
A. The Jewish way is by PERSONAL OBSERVATION of the law to obtain its righteousness (Rom. 10:1-3). This way is summarized in the words "going about to establish their own" (v. 3a) which is rejecting the righteousness God has freely provided by God through Christ (v. 3b).
B. The Pauline way is by SUBSTITUTIONARY OBSERVATION through the Person of Christ where Christ's own personal obedience to the law is received by faith (Rom. 10:4) without our works.
C. This contrast is elaborated in verses 5-10 whereby the law and faith are personified (Moses, Faith) and speak concerning how righteousness is obtained. First the law speaks (Moses - v. 5) and then Faith speaks (vv. 6-10). First Paul tells us what faith does not say (vv. 5-7) and then what it does say (vv. 8-10) concerning how to obtain the righteousness of the Law.
1. How the Law says that righteousness must be obtained - v. 5
5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
Faith that justifies does not demand YOUR PERSONAL observation of the Law to acheive its justificaition. That is what Moses (personification of the law) said - YOU do this and live
2. How faith says that righteousness must be obtained - vv. 6-10
a. How Faith says it is not obtained - vv. 6-7
6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above
7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
Faith does not demand the REDUPLICATION of the life of Christ by you to obtain the righteousness required by the law to be saved. Paul summarizes the life of Christ from His incarnation (bring Christ down from heaven) to his resurrection (to bring up Christ again from the dead). Note the word "again" showing this is a REDUPLICATION of the entire life of Christ by a person.
b. How faith says it is obtained - vv. 8-10
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation
Notice there is not "do this" or "going about trying" or "bringing Christ down....up again" - NO PERSONAL OBSERVATION of God's Law and NO PERSONAL REDUPLICATION OF CHRIST's LIFE to obtain righteousness to be saved.
The only thing faith demands to obtain the righteousness demanded by the Law is to embrace the good news that God has provided it freely without works to all who simply believe Jesus Christ satisfied it for all who believe.
The SDA doctrine that we are justified by faith in Christ without works ONLY TO BE ABLE to REDUPLICATE Christ's life by our own obedience in order to be obtain that righteousness is repudiated by Paul in verses 6-7. Indeed, it is an oxymoronic doctrine that demands acceptance of Christ's own personal obedience as sufficient to justify us without works only to repudiate it as suffiienct without our own personal obedience.
Our "new" life is not designed to replace Christ's life for justification but is the CONSEQUENCE of regeneration and progressive sanctification and nothing to do with justification as that has been accomplished completely and fully by the personal life of Christ. Moreover, our regenerate life NEVER reduplicates the sinless life of Christ and the righteousness required by the law is sinlessness. SDA attempts to make the consequence of justfication the utlimate cause of justification. This is the REDUPLICATION THEORY which is nothing less than "another gospel" which repudiates the sufficiency of Christ's life to completely satisfy all the demands of the Law for righteousness.
