5 stones

(1) He was simply obeying the Leadership of the Lord of Hosts

(2) God is able to do EXCEEDING ABUNDANTLY above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us---Ephesians 3:20

What soldier would make haste into battle with only one bullet???

David only needed one!!! But God was going to supply more according to His riches in Christ Jesus!

Goliath had four other brothers---"Feel lucky, punks???"

..........the other stones were for the other brothers. "Thought" There will be other giants! Another thought, Did you ever say something you wish you could take back? Notice ISam.17:10.

David was used to using this weapon. Five stones was the normal number that would fit in his pouch. Habits run strong. If he needed a second one, it was ready to go.

David picked up 5 stones when he brought down Goliath. Any insight as to why he picked up 5 instead of one.
Murph
II Samuel 21:16-22

v. 22 - "These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants."

(1) Goliath was the Giant David Killed in I Sam 17

(2) Goliath had four sons who apparently were also his brothers (via Goliath's incest with his mother)

(3) You can test the "accuracy of the 'new' versions by reading II Samuel 21:19 - many 'new' versions have someone OTHER THAN David as the slayer of Goliath.

rbrent is correct about the first part. David fully expected to slay Goliath and his brothers.

The comment about the modern versions is in poor taste though since it isn't rooted in fact.

That's also how the Hebrew reads. Therefore there was possibly more than one man named Goliath. The KJV changed the meaning of the text to eliminate a perceived contradiction, instead of simply letting the text stand and finding an explanation.

I believe David picked up 5 stones "just because". I could be wrong though.

I beleive he picked up five stones because he picked up five stones. No spiritual implication here. If there was, the Bible would have commented. I've heard that if David had real faith then he would have just picked up one. But in my struggles in life, the ones that I know I have faith in, there have been times when God didn't answer on the first stone, but I didn't lose faith. Instead it took maybe the third stone for God to answer my prayer.
Meaning: Keep the faith. Even after you've used two stones, God will still come through!!

In case he missed.

Agreed, I think he just reached down and picked up five stones.

I don't believe what I'm reading! But then again...

The Bible: the Spirit inspired Book of application through the implications of revelation through the Word to meet every aspect of life spiritually, mentally, as well as scientifically, and physically, for eternity?

In homiletics isn't this referenced as a spiritual application to overcoming giant"s"/plural, because the One Rock is certainly enough to take care of the "leader"/Goliath/thedevil, having plenty of reserve of the grace/#5, (which is required to overcome to begin), to overcome any adversary as well?

I'm really beginning to detect the lack of spirituality in here, and that from some one who is not very spiritual at all!

Oh yeah, I forgot "God's" people don't mind "preaching" they just don't like getting preached to.

Please forgive me, the Bible says to.

Just because our reading of the Bible doesn't require a calculator doesn't make us less "spiritual." As a general rule, allegory is a very bad hermeneutic.

QS,

Please don't accuse others of being "unspiritual" simply becasue there is a different perspective on the five stones.

I think that if there was a real reason for telling us why Daivd picked up five stones God would have told us.

Now I suppose this is going to end up a debate over the inspiration of Scripture issue? All I did was make an observation regarding the posts that said "it has no spiritual implications"

You people just like to jump all over me don't you?

Sorry, but I fail to see where I accused anyone, but I have made an observation that things appear that way is all. Also since the Holy Ghost inspired "five stones" then the passage has definite spiritual implications; those relating to God's mercy and His grace/ Biblical numerics for instance.

All I did was set it up for those who made their remarks as it not having spiritual implications to reconsider given the facts. Also I was executing my rights as a BB membeer to give my view of the "5 stones" issue. It seems I can't do that w/o some one implicating I meant something contrary to what I post, now that does "reak" of unspirituality there my brother.

Oh, well, I'm getting real used to having to defend every post I make in here, against "christians"

And what do you based this one?? There are "five"s all over Scripture with no spiritual implications at all. There is no reason to think that five has any spiritual significance. There is enough to preach from this text without adding this kind of stuff. Preach the text ... nothing else.

Numerology is a much abused notion of Scripture. Five means five. There is no reason to think that it means anything else. People make this stuff up because it preaches well, not because it has anything to do with what should be preached.

Pick up a book by John Davis on biblical numerology. It will be very helpful.

All I did was set it up for those who made their remarks as it not having spiritual implications to reconsider given the facts.
But there are no facts to reconsider in light of that have to do with the number five. That is the problem, I think. You are seeeing "facts" when in fact there are none. We are always better off to stick with the text. That is what God inspired. He did not inspire this speculation.

This quote of yours "I'm really beginning to detect the lack of spirituality in here" clearly implies that you think others who find no significance in the number 5 have a "lack of spirituality."

It is always best to address the issue and not the holders of opinions.

"brother" larry is that a "command"?

I already "covered" the application of their being 5 stones, and I don't put all the emphasis on Bible Numerology, it's the application that it took the grace of God to have what it took to defeat Goliath, unless you suggest it was all in David's physical ability which I would laugh you to scorn.

I'm NOT speculating, God said there were 5 stones and their were 5 stones. The LORD has His reason for stating it and one of them is to apply the doctrine of grace in the matter of overcoming spiritual giants. Let me remind you of a New Testament truth:

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood,(physical) but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

I stick with grace, you can have all the "mud" you desire.
