I think maybe our definitions of multiculturalism are getting in the way.

    1. Some speak of mc as everyone being unified by their diversity. In essence, we come together with all our quirks but agree what language to speak, which country to hold allegiance to and common standards and beliefs.

    2. Others mean mc to be everyone having their own language, schools, communities, alligiances and so on.

The first does bring prosperity, the second brings destruction.

Grumpy old England? I can't remember who said it, but you are mistaken. That civil war, and it was a civil war as you were British colonies at the time, was about taxes, not dominion. :)) A few hundred years on and your STILL complaining about taxes.)

(So how much trouble will that paragraph get me into...)

I believe what made America great was its Christian heritage and multitudes coming together to be American! You meet many French-Americans, Scottish-Americans, Irish-Americans and so forth. But they are all American.

What is happening now is you are getting Mexicans, Chinese, Mongolians (?) and all nationalities coming in and imposing their beliefs, standards, languages, customs and culture with no regard for the great nation that has accepted them.

The situation in the UK is very, very similar and I believe large scale "race" riots are very likely in the near future.

Yes, diversity is good, but there has to be some agreed unifying standards other wise all you have is diversity and as the old saying goes - untied we stand, divided we fall.

As in Anglo-American? Only part of the US's heritage is Christian.

Mexicans have been here at least as long as we have. We snatched some of their territory. What, in your opinion, makes them less Christian than the Irish?

We imported the Chinese to work on the railroads and sugar plantations. It was a long time before we'd even consider giving them citizenship or equal rights to marriage. We, a lot of us, wouldn't let them intermarry or live in the same neighborhoods.

Mongolians? So far, they haven't imposed their yurts on us.

How long have you guys been at peace with the English? Should Gaelic and Welsh be forbidden again?

Hm, "untied" we stand? Freudian slip?

I thought the unifying standard was the Constitution including the Bill of Rights and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - nothing about Anglo Christianity over Mongolian Buddhism or Chinese Confucianism (and that dang feng shui).

Don't be so easily marginialised. I did not list all the original pilgrim's origins as I have others things to do in life. I just wanted to show that many diverse peoples founded the US.

Yes, so have many Native American Indian tribes... and buffalos and the US took their land too. History is full of injustices. There is no denying that and there is usually no fixing that either. Such injustice is what is trying to be avoided now.

As for what makes them less Christian... well, like any one else, rejecting Christ makes a person considerably less Christian.

    Please clarify your point.

That was my extreme example. :) But you never know, yurts may be the way forward!

Gaelic and Welsh is taught in some schools, but English is the first language.

I am proud of my resistance to start telling Welsh jokes... :)

    Possibly. :)

You'll be aware, I am sure, that it was the Christian heritage that allowed for Religious Liberty. So, yes, I stand by the fact that a predomintly Christian heritage is what gave the US its initial blessings and prosperity. The majority of places that do not have Christian principles do not allow the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

    Barbarian observes:
Darn, I had no idea those Cajuns were destroying America by speaking French!

It actually is. Sort of. I had a friend in graduate school whose father had lived in S. Louisiana all his life. He decided to go to visit France, figuring he already knew French.

He didn't have any trouble communicating, but a lot of people grinned when he talked to them. Turns out he was speaking 15th century French, more or less. It was kind of like someone in America speaking in the style of the King James Bible.
